Hello! I have 2 HDDs, on one there is xp and on other win7. Can I remove the xp just by formatting the HDD and no harm is done or is there another way?

I have a laptop with Windows 7 that recently stopped recognizing flash drives. Any flash drive. It says that they have to be formatted before they can be used. I use it on my desktop and the drive works fine, but not in the laptop. Any suggestions?
