I want to use it mainly for games but should be capable of anything else required
I want

I5 3570k £164
Asrock z77 pro3 or similar <£80
samsung 840 ssd (£120 at the mo)
1x 8gb 1600 ddr3 ram (for now)
Corsair builder series 750w psu (£64)
Gtx 670 - most likely gigabyte wf £300

I need a case ~£50 (don't need LEDs etc)
A CPU cooler

I am looking to get 4.5ghz from CPU and want card to run as fast as stable a little boost is enough

I already have a hdd spare and an optical drive

I have not over clocked before but I think it's within my abilities

in the future I would like to add another 8gb ram and another 670
Please advise, all responses/advice welcome

Been shopping through part picker uk but any uk retailer is fine

Starting from the top:
7970 outperforms the 670 at the same price look into that card. Gigabyte GHz edition or the Sapphire GHz edition should suffice

HAF 912 should be around 50 it's a grate case for the money

To get 4.5GHz you are going to need a heavy duty cooler, the Noctua D-14 can get you there easily (it's also cheaper and better than ANY closed loop water cooling solution). The other choice is the Cooler Master 212 Hyper EVO, can get you to 4.2 Ghz most of the time its also at a great price.

Overclocking is fairly simple there are guides for each CPU & mobo combo most of the time.

Hi mate, that looks like a good start. I have a couple of recommendations though:

I'd go for the 120GB Samsung 840 (this will fit your OS, applications and a couple of games) and it's just £74 on amazon at the moment.

I would recommend purchasing 2x4gb sticks of RAM instead of 1x8gb - you'll have faster access times from dual channel over single channel. Your motherboard will have 4 slots for memory and at the moment 8gb is more than enough - and you'll always have the option of upgrading to 16gb (4x4gb) in the future.

The HD 7970 is a more powerful card than the GTX 670 and is priced almost the same. I would definitely recommend getting one of these.

Also be aware that the ASRock Pro3 does not support SLi (So the ATI card would be an even better option).

There is absolutely no, no no no no need for a Xeon on a gaming rig. You do not come out ahead purchasing one. For one thing you forfeit the onboard graphics and if something goes wrong with your GPU you're pretty much SOL. And if you're not going to overclock the Hyper 212 is a wasted purchase.

On £1000 here is what I would suggest:

Here is my recommendation:

CPU: Core i5 3570K (£159.59 @ Amazon)
MOBO: ASRock Pro4 (£89.99 @ Amazon)
RAM: Patriot 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz Viper 3 Black Mamba (£38.91 @ Amazon)
GPU: Asus AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB (£319.99 @ Amazon)
SSD: Samsung 840 120GB (£73.99 @ Amazon)

Case: Thermaltake V3 "BlacX Edition" Midi Tower Case (£41.66 @ Amazon)

Total: £794.06 (Including delivery and tax)

If you want to overclock then you will need a better cooler (I use the Antec Khuler and have my 3570k at 4.5GHz with max temps of around 65-68C - you can pick this up for about £47)

ASRock boards are in fact very capable motherboards for overclocking. The Pro4 comes with a personal recommendation from me. If you check my sig you'll see that I am running an i5 3570k at 4.5GHz in mine - this is with very little tweaking of the voltage and completely stable with a max temperature of 65-68C at full load. OP is looking to get 4.5GHz out of his chip so this board is a fantastic price for that.

I have recommended a 650w PSU as OP has indicated that he wishes to purchase a second graphics card at a later date, this gives him room to do that without having to worry.

You'd shit a brick if you saw my Coolermaster 500w PSU running my OC'd 3570k on a Pro4 at 4.5GHz. Too bad I didn't buy a 650w PSU that could run at 900w on overload...I could have installed a fridge inside my case to keep my beers cool!

As the title says, £800 build and he wants a 4.5GHz overclock. My suggested system does that and it meets his budget. Both systems you have suggested are over budget and offer zero performance gains to the build that I suggested.

I wouldn't purchase a Xeon for anything but a server or a workstation, there really isn't a need for it in a gaming system. Is it slightly faster? Yes. The keyword though is slightly. But the 3570K can be clocked to match any stock CPU speed and then some depending on which cooler you use.
