- Question -
I recently purchased a 1GHz T-Bird, however I can only get it to run at 750Mhz. Although it boots to a command prompt when I attempt to load Windows (98 or 2000) I get three short beeps and then the screen goes blank. If I hit a key the system beeps once and then it proceeds farther into the install. It will proceed at random lengths of time and then do the same thing. If I keep hitting the keys it will go all the way through the install procedure.
My system specs and attempted, but failed, solutions follow.
- System Specs -
Mother Board - ASUS A7V133
Processor - AMD Athlon 1.0 GHz Thunderbird 266 FSB
- A1000 AMT 3C, AXIA0109BPAW, Y6073350179
Cooler - GlobalWIN FOP32-1, took the supplied tape off and used Thermal Paste instead
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon 32Mb DDR LE AGP
Power Supply - Sky Hawk, Series A8-95, 300 Watt (AMD Aprvd)
All of the above were purchased new in the last 2 weeks.
Hard Drive - Quantus 6gb/UDMA 66/5400
- Using until Maxtor 40gb/UMDA 100/7200 arrives next week
Memory - (2) 256Mb Crucial CL2 Sync 100Mhz
- Settings and Configurations -
Mother Board Temperature = 29C
Processor Temperature = 39C - 41C
V Core Voltage = 1.74V + 3.3V Voltage = 3.23V
+ 5.0V Voltage = 5.08V - 5.0V Voltage = - 5.34V
+12.0V Voltage = 12.06V -12.0V Voltage = -12.06V
DRAM Frequency = 133MHz
Operating Freq = By Jumper (100MHz/10.0x)
- I also have tried letting the motherboard auto configure and it comes up the same way, 750MHz.
- Attempted Solutions
1) Thoroughly cleaned the top of the processor with Isopropyl Alcohol, applied paste, and connected Heat sink
2) I have not attempted Over-Clocking or the Pencil trick with this processor
3) Switching to a PCI Graphics Card instead of AGP - similar results
3) Changed Keyboards (Both PS2) and Mice (PS2 - USB)
5) I have been through the ASUS Manual pg. 22-23 for frequency settings and pg. 45 Beep Codes, no listing for 3 short beeps
6) Tried re-seating the Memory and Video Card.
- After rebooting and starting 10 times it appeared to work the first 5 then on 6,7,9,10 the beeps returned. With boots 9 and 10 getting the beeps more than once.
- On the occasions where Windows would boot I tried doing some simple activities, defrag, code scan, Directory tree and then the system would freeze on me.
Thank you for any help you might be able to provide, hopefully in the future I'll be able to return the help.
