My friend just recently installed windows 10 and it says he has 100% disk usage all the time and it won't go down. Nothing else is installed on his PC and we tried various things to fix it but nothing seems to work. Any Ideas?

Solution
If you're willing to spend about $55 you could get a 240 GB SSD and put Windows on it. That would in all likelyhood get rid of the problem. Bear in mind that Defender likes to do a scan first thing after you boot, and that could be at least some of what you're seeing. When I installed SSDs in my two test systems, that problem was reduced to less than a minute after booting.

Good luck.
Two things that can cause this:
Bad or Corrupted Driver
Malware Infection

To see if you have a bad driver try look at Device Manager for yellow icons

To get rid of Malware infections, I recommend installing and running Malwarebytes FREE Edition.

Check to see which processes are running at 100% disk access.

Couple of quick other options to check on while doing that.
1. Microsoft updates. Makes sure he's fully up to date and also not distributing out updates to other systems on the network. If its stuck trying to do a ton of updates behind the scenes it can spike your disk usage.

2. Check the schedule tasks for Chrome. Sometimes that will get fouled up and run disk usage at 100%

Ok I actually did ask him what processes were using the 100% disk and he said it was system and compressed memory and service host. I googled Why is my system and compressed memory maxing out my "disk". Found that OneDrive is apparently causing the problem so I had him disable OneDrive and restart his PC to see if it is still causing the problem.

I will have him Check schedule tasks for Chrome when his PC restarts

His windows updates are all up to date, I had him check the Device Manager(I am unsure if he clicked Hidden Drivers, will ask though) He did how ever run MalwareBytes and found nothing.

We already tried all of that, that possible fix was easy to find seeing as you posted it in every topic related to this. Regardless if people said that it didn't fix it.
For future notice we tried everything that was already tried from the other posts before posting this.
Thanks though~

Well, high disk usage could be caused by different things. This is why, disabling these services may or may not help.
If you describe the troubleshooting you've done up until now as "various things" and "everything already tried", all the users posting in this thread are just shooting in the dark.

It would be helpful if you provide all the troubleshooting you've done.

Apart from all this, you can check the drive's health status out. Use a tool that can provide a SMART report. Sometimes this high disk usage could be caused by a failing drive.

No failing drive, No malware, Disabled Superfecth, disable options in chrome, Disabled OneDrive, No skype on the PC, changed the virtual memory. All I can remember that we have done

Defender and other antivirus programs like to do a scan after you boot. Sometimes they can elect to do a full system scan which will do what you're seeing. If you put Windows on an SSD, this will happen extremely fast, less than a minute.

Good luck.

My friend actually has an SSD just sitting around he never installed it, even though i told him he should do it and put windows on it for faster boot times. We shall try that
