Approximate Purchase Date: asap

Budget Range: (e.g.: 300-400) $1000-1300 CAN (or less!)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Content creation, animation, 3d animation, programming, gaming

Are you buying a monitor: No but suggestions for an ultrawide / content creation model are welcome

Parts to Upgrade: CPU, mobo, RAM Power supply existing: Corsair HX650

Do you need to buy OS: Not sure yet
Please note that if you're using an OEM license of Windows, you will need a new one when buying a new motherboard.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:
canadacomputers.com

Location: Ontario, Canada

Parts Preferences: ASUS, Intel, NVIDIA, Kingston

Overclocking: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire:No

Your Monitor Resolution: Needs tons of REZ, can't afford upgrade yet to monitor.

Additional Comments: Been a while since my upgrade looking for something future ready and very stable. Not so important to have cutting edge for games as it's mostly for 3d animation / content creation. Hoping to use my existing GPU, Geforce GTX 660 for the time being.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: I need a system capable of running the new more demanding new adobe creative suite software and maybe I'll play some new games too.

Include a list of any parts you have already selected with descriptively labeled links for parts.

Here are some components I'm leaning towards but looking for some pro nerd guidance. I do like these brands however.

Intel Core i7-12700KF Desktop Processor 12 (8P+4E) Cores

(edited I had a micro ATX here before, removed no DDR5 option, should I consider DD4 mobo as an option to save a buck? Seems not much more for a mobo that supports DDR5)

ASUS Prime Z690-A LGA 1700(Intel12th) ATX motherboard

Kingston FURY Beast (Black) 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 4800MHz CL38 Desktop Memory Kit

It's been a while since I upgraded and I'm excited about it! Looking forward to the insight provided by the great community here.

Cheers.

Here's a few less expensive boards worth having a look at.

ASUS TUF GAMING B660M-PLUS WIFI D4 $229.99

B660M AORUS PRO AX DDR4 $244.99

If 100 ROG boards are used, and 10 Tuf boards are used, and there's a 10% rate of issue, you'll see 10 posts about ROG, but only 1 post about Tuf.

The Tuf line is a mid grade board, but happens to use the same VRM's as the ROG serues, which are the top line mobo's. Many choose the ROG over the Tuf because of name, or features or supposed OC ability. But realistically, for most ppl, the Tuf is more than good enough.

Thanks for that info! That makes sense. I did notice there were some added features / ports on ROG.

I'm considering going a gen back as Cpt Snake suggested. To socket 1200. There doesn't seem a huge price diff between it though? Sort of confusing that way. Then I think I don't need bleeding edge, and perhaps Z590 chipset and 1200 will be more stable?

$309! socket 1200, that seems steep?

Lots of variation in pricing? I don't think I'm ready to start looking at the vidcard market if this is what mobos look like lol.

Depends on your usage and availability. I'd have no issues recommending a 10900/k for someone who has use for production stuff, vs the price of a 12700k/12900k, but I can't see recommending a 11600k over a 12400 if gaming is the priority.

In 10th/11th gen, OC was still of somewhat tangible benefit, not so with 12th gen. The prior gens were limited to PL1 and PL2 values, basically max boost for 56 seconds at full power, then chill at TDP after that. With 12th gen, Intel relaxed the restrictions of Tau, so that 28/56 second PL2 is non-existant, it's unlimited PL2. In other words, Intel went back to Turbo and Base power levels, you never see Base anymore, all Turbo.

When you've got clocks hitting 5.0GHz+ on all the cores used, there's really no point to trying to get all cores doing the same.

A 12400 on a B660 mobo will get you 90%+ of what's available from a 12900k on Z690, at a fraction of the cost.

This is the thing about forum. Someone will always disagree. Make up your own mind, and live with it. I am a gamer, mostly, I am happy with my system. As long as my computer works...I am happy. Good Luck . Don't get in a discussion of 45's, 9mm, and 10 mm. Never win on other web sites. Just make up your mnd. I buy fro Amazon, so returns are easy, if you don't like the components. I AM NOT TROLLING!. END OF DISCUSSION.

45's have higher grain, lead bullets, more punching power at short-medium range. 9mm are rifle loads, less punch but more accuracy especially with full metal jackets at medium-long range. 10mm are lead, low grain, short range and make up for stopping power with volume. 🤣🤣

Just wanted to ping some of the kind people who contributed to this thread to see if any of the recommendations may have changed with the changing market. Still haven't upgraded but finally looking to do so in the next couple weeks!

The market changed today from what it was yesterday. It'll change again, tomorrow. What only you can know is what your budget looks like, what demands and requirements you have or have not changed. So with all that, start over. You'll have the basic gist of what's needed, but the specifics will be settled on right before you hit the 'buy now' button.

Very true! Here's my current parts list if you're interested: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/xkRT6r
The most confusing for me is the vid card. I game occasionally but I need gpu power for animation and video editing. Nothing 4k though but I wouldn't mind to future proof for that however. Thx for you previous advice it has made the mobo search way easier for me!
Save some money on the board.
