Oblivion really isn't that great for comparison. It's an ATI-heavy-handed game, nVidia's 84.13 (I think that's the number) drivers aren't out, so AA+HDR+Shaders aren't all supported together very well. I'm running the beta drivers and they'll work like a charm, as expected, with better support for the 90nm cards that were just released.

I would consider BF2, COD2, some MMO like WoW.. etc to be good comparisons alongside Oblivion, but you can't just take Oblivion by itself. Perhaps this 33-year-old doesn't want to play a game with elves (that look like crap), swords, and castles. Just a thought, though.

Well, if I say it's playable, that means I can play it with max (or close to max) settings at 1280x1024 resolution.

The 7600 GT I'm using can play Far Cry & Serious Sam with HDR enabled at that res and detail with no problems whatsoever, in the 50 FPS range...

...Oblivion I get high 20's with HDR @ 1024x768 with grass on Maximum, outside (When I actually play I put the grass level down for higher FPS, but I wanted to benchmark it under the most stressful conditions)... my X1800 XL (very surprisingly) doesn't do much better than that at stock speeds on my system (Athlon64 2.55 Ghz)

This isn't performance I'm guessing or assuming or estimating either, I've run the card three times per benchmark to get averages. It's part of a review I'm working on. (although admittedly I don't have my exact numbers where I'm posting from, but like I said it's in the 50 fps average range for the shooters with HDR)

I am truly well satisfied with the 7600 GT after putting it through the paces. I'd still recommend the X1800 GTO assuming prices are identical though, but I'm confortable saying that either of those cards can handle HDR, as long as they're paired with a good system.

If you arent going to overclock, the 7600 GT is every bit as good as the X1800 GTO.
For overclockers though, the X1800 GTO runs away... yes, they both overclock well, but the X1800 GTO scales much better. The 256-bit memory just helps alot when overclocked to get those high resolutions playable.

Nividia cards can't support OpenEXR HDR & AA at the same time, it's not a driver issue, it's a limitation with the 6x00/7x00 series.

I would go for X850XT ,if you can find one PE better... althrough new products are desirable, I would point one thing... an 2000 top car in mint conditions , will always be better than a 2006 tercel... once X850XT was the king of the hill ... not because it was so expensive, but because it was a good VGA with excelent features... 7600 is fine , but just average VGA... for your needs I would stick with X850XT (but I would try to find one PE on Ebay...) I like Nvidia , for my professional requirements, today I got 6800 ultra (that I turned into quadro with rivaturner) . It is not the best on new games... for my skills it is perfect, and much cheaper than any new quadro (which I honestly cannot afford)... from the VGA you listed... X850XT with sure...

If the X850 XT is a 1984 Ferrari Testarossa, a 7600 GT is a Dodge Calibur SRT-4

Just because it isn't the top of the line when it's released, doesn't mean it can't run with the big dogs... check out the benches between the cards.

The 7600 GT's HDR capability makes it more desirable... if you're going to play newer titles, that is.

the 7900gt seems to be future proof once dx 10 and once Vista comes out, I'm personally aint an Nvidia fan, but I know that the Ati hardware is standard, but their catalyst software is wonderful. The Nvidia hardware is GREAT but Their FORCEWARE sucks!! Thats just my opinion. I have an EVGA 7900Gt, great card, But for the Vista and DX10, the 7900gt wins the choice. Havent seen nothing wrong with it yet.

The Mazdaspeed 3 is supposed to be out this year as well, detuned Mazdaspeed 6 engine @ 250 horsepower I believe... not too shabby, maybe it's time for a trade-in.

Oh, it'll be hard for us to take it to the slalom, I live in Winnipeg. But if I ever visit California I'll drop you a line. Still, I'm going to assume you're better than me, I don't get much driving time on the courses.

While I've ignored this thread pretty much, I will say this, DON'T TALK BS!

Oblivion is an nV TWIMTBP title, so the performance is based on better design not heavy-handedness. If anything the lack of inclusion of HDR+AA was for nV's benifit.

HDR+AA in Oblivion will never work like a charm on nV's current hardware, in order to even make it a checkbox option they will have to run loops with non FP16 stages if they want to get it to work at all, and likely at alot less than half the speed of ATi's cards.

Got some of my Redline parts on order today, Looking to break 13.5 in the quarter after I get them installed, but that's just a goal, I'll be happy to be in the 13's regardless. You think so? I'd have to assume the Calibur weighs alot more than an Evo just by looking at it, so that might help Mitsu hand out the power. Then again, I have no idea the curb weights of the two. You'd probably have a better idea of that than I do.

Have fun with the performance parts, there. It's been a while since I owned a car that could break into the 13s.

I have no idea of the Caliber's curb weight, but I can tell you that the EVO's AWD parts add up to take a weight hit. And that's all recipricating mass, too. So, I would imagine if nothing else, max boost on the caliber would be less than the Evo. Thanks for the Envy! Wish I could afford to break into the 12's sometime. Maybe with the Firebird, next year, or the year after...

12's! Jesus murphy... I've never had a car that could perform anywhere near the 12's. That was always somehting I considered out of my league. I'd love to drag a 12-second car though, just to see how different it feels.

I managed low 13's with my Coronet and a lightly massaged 383 magnum, all you had to worry about with those cars was mostly traction, add a cam and exhaust for good measure and 13's weren't a big deal.

Not much for handling though... But fairly nimble considering the size & technology. Still, you're not going to do anything competitively except drag race in those b-body chryslers. I gotta say, the mazda is alot of fun in the corners, zoom-zooming around town. But in a straight line the best I can hope for is taking out an Acura RSX... and I'm talking the base model.
