Greetings Everyone!

So, I've been doing research but for the life of me I can't find an actual lengthy discussion on the subject. Nor a real answer.

Very simply, I want to know the performance improvement I would get if I would go with a 2070 Super versus my current 1080.

Is the extra cost worth it? or is the upgrade quite pointless at this point.

Let me know what you think.

That depends:
  • What is your monitor's resolution and refresh rate?
  • Does your monitor have FreeSync, GSync, or neither?
  • What games do you play?

EDIT: the TL;DR version is that the 2070 Super performs around the point, maybe a little less, than the 2080 non-super, which outperforms the 1080Ti.

My current specs are:

CPU: i9 9900k (OC 5ghz)

Aorus x390 Pro

16gb 3200 (Corsair)

Monitor is 144hz G-SYNC (2560 x 1444)

Honestly, it's hard to say what I play because that can vary. I do play quite a few games that utilize Unreal 4.

At that resolution and refresh rate, you'd probably be looking at 2080 Super territory, if you want to take advantage of that full refresh rate.

If you don't actually care about hitting 144fps all the time, then you could go with the 2070 Super, but I'm not sure if the extra cost is worth it.

What's your performance like now with the 1080? Is it really falling short for what you want?

Addendum to my own general summary on this, given the update to the GPU hierarchy chart yesterday.

Using the scoring there - ultimately, you'll get SOME performance gain, but I still think it's not worth it, unless maybe you can get a decent price for your used 1080:
GPUScore
RTX 2080 Super
98.2
RTX 2080
96.1
GTX 1080 Ti
96.0
RTX 2070 Super
94.1
GTX 1080
84.3

Yeah, it looks like the gains aren't very substantial. I'm not getting bad performance - but I do notice drops. Maybe I'm just not understanding what the problem is - I just seem to get lots of dips, especially in anything related to Unreal 4. This could be due to optimization issues (Squad, Hell Let Loose) even Warthunder has some drops. I'm being picky here but I do notice it.

Maybe. Can you run HWInfo while playing? Let it graph your GPU and CPU utilization. I am almost positive it WON'T be pegging the CPU at any point, but it's possible.

Also, maybe hard drive? If it has to grab data, such a thing might happen. Again, unlikely.

Still, couldn't hurt to run it, and see if anything is getting pegged at 100% unexpectedly.
