1080p monitors

Is 1080p visually better than 720p than in a monitor that's around 24 inches? I have read that 1080p isn't even worth it unless it's 40 inches or larger, but I didn't know if that was because of how close you are to it or just that it has to be that big regardless. Would I be able to tell a huge difference sitting only a foot away from my screen?

Yes there is a huge difference as far as computer monitors is concerned. You'll notice much more desktop space on a monitor with a res of 1920x1200, as opposed to 1440x900. You'll be able to open more windows w/o them overlapping as much. In games you notice less jaggies and the sharper textures will be very noticable w/ the higher resolution monitor.

Highly in agreement there. When they talk about 720p vs. 1080p for HDTV's they're assuming a viewing distance of 6' or greater. As you know with a computer monitor, you're considerably closer.

If you can discern individual pixels pretty easily from your viewing distance, it's safe to say you'll notice a significant boost by using a higher resolution screen.

I have heard the same thing about 720 vs 1080. They say the human eye can't even decipher the difference at smaller sizes.

Common sense dictates that viewing distance is more of a factor than size. 24" at 2' viewing distance NECESSITATES 1920x1200 (or 1080).

I wouldn't mess around with buying some Samsung TV LCD crap...go with the 30" Dell 3007WFP. That's an actual computer LCD monitor 30" with very crisp images and very high resolution - and the price is right. Any TV/LCD monitor that you buy to plug into a computer will look like junk, so it's better if you want a regular computer monitor but big with excellent quality, then that's what I'd get. I bought the Dell 3007WFP and I couldn't be happier. It even came with a 3 year warranty from Dell.

Samsung make some of the nicest displays (monitors and TVs) on the market.

I'm happy you're happy with your Dell, but Samsung is not a crap producer of items.

By the way...he's talking about 24" not 30"

What w0by is saying is not that the brands are crappy, he is saying that if you use a TV LCD screen (it was meant to be a TV) and use it for computer use, it will be sub-par to a LCD screen designed for computers. He says it will look like junk, well, I agree in some cases, I have 15 different models of sony, samsung, toshiba and others, that are TVs being used for computer monitors.

Basically, if you could buy a viewsonic computer monitor, 24", or a samsung LCD TV, you would want the viewsonic, as it is a computer monitor, and will have a cleaner picture if both screens are viewed at the same resolution.
