Hello! It's been quite a few years since my last PC build and I'm definitely rusty.

So I have an Aorus Z790M Elite Ax Ice motherboard and I notice there are now 12 pins for the CPU power socket on the motherboard. But my PSU only has an Eight pin CPU power cable.

My CPU I'm going to install is an i9 14900k. I have no interest in overclocking, do I need to buy a new PSU that has a 12 Pin CPU cable or is it okay to do just use the 8 pin power socket?

I'm eventually going to get an RTX 5080 so a PSU upgrade -is- in the near future anyway. I don't want to pull out the corsair in my current build to test either, ugh.

Thanks!

Please include the specs to your build in the thread's body as sig space specs can and will change, rendering this thread and it's relevant suggestions moot to the end user in the same boat as you're in now.

Thumb rule with PSU's is that if you don't have the necessary connectors for your components from you PSU, you either have;
a| the wrong PSU for the build
or
b| the wrong components for the build.

Just an FYI, if you're referring to the EPS connectors for the motherboard, that there's an 8pin and a 4pin EPS connector, you need to ensure you've connected the 8pin primarily. If you're pursuing a high overclock or dropping in an i9 processor, then you hook up the 4pin EPS as well.

What PSU are you working with(both on your build and the new one...?

Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

Moved thread from CPUs section to Systems section.

It's a pretty simple question, if the motherboard has 8pins EPS and a 4pin EPS next to it, can I get away with just using the 8pin if I won't be overclocking?

But okay, I'll list all the components that are irrelevant to my question 😉

CPU: i9 14900k
MB: Aorus Z790M Elite Ax Ice
GPU: evga RTX 3080 XC3 Hybrid
RAM: 2 x 32GB 6000mhz DDR5 Vengeance Storage: Samsung EVO 970 Plus 2TB
