I have a ''gaming'' laptop which has a HDMI and a VGA output. I would like to connect said laptop to a 120/144hz monitor. I am aware that neither of these display outputs can handle 1080p @ 120hz. What I would like to know is; if I turn down the resolution to say 1024*768, will either of these connections be able to output 120/144hz.

For the sake of the question lets assume that the laptop is perfectly capable of running games at 144hz. (basically it's for playing CSGO, I'll be playing other games 1080p @60hz anyway.)

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I have failed to find a definitive answer anywhere.

The laptop is an MSI ge60
I haven't decided on a monitor yet, but it's probably going to be a lg 24gm77 unless none of this works.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

first, if nvidia control panel tells you it is running at 120 hz, it is probably true. also monitors always have some kind of status report in the osd. finally you can also feel it. just try moving the mouse at 60 hz, then go to 120. it will be a lot smoother.

yes, easily. the cable will(use quality ofc)do it. i ran a 1600x1200 crt at 100 hz with vga for a long time. however, considering you got a laptop there with god knows what non-capabilities, you better doublecheck.

Cheers man. I'll probably just take my laptop into the store and plug her in there if they let me. Are they any ways to quickly check that I am in fact watching something at 120hz?
