120Hz Display

Hello,

What's the best 120hz monitor currently on the market. I'm interested in purchasing any of the latest monitors and use 120hz (not interested in 3d at the moment especially since I don't own an nvidia graphics card).

So far the choices seem to be:

Acer GD235HZ
Asus VG236h
Alienware OptX AW2310
LG W2363d
BenQ XL2410t
Planar SA2311w (Coming out Dec?)
Viewsonic V3D241wm (Not out yet)

Again not looking for 3d, but the 'fastest' and best quality 120hz screen.

First of all, I will put my vote in for the Asus model.

That's what I've got right now, the color isn't 100% accurate, but it is superb in every other aspect.

Also, to dipankar:

120Hz monitors have great use outside of the '3d' realm. I can personally attest that *some* people will be astonished how much more fluid, realisitic, and snappy everything becomes running at 120fps.

^^ I STILL use a 240Hz CRT for competitive gaming; a lot of people will still play at 1024x768 in order to get superfluid framerates.

As for TV's, VERY few non-3d TV's (if any) support 120Hz input signals. More likely, they use image interpolation to artifically doube the amount of frames displayed (which induces a lot of LAG into the system). Likewise, HDMI 1.3 is incapable of 1080p/120Hz, so displayport/lower resolution is the only way to get refresh rates that high.

Most TV's come with a manual (which can be read online) that specifies what input modes are supported. MAke sure, whatever you get can accept a 120Hz input signal before you get it.

You will need a powerful gpu to run games at 120flps.And a monitor can make a system snappy that is news to me.

You don't understand, the game does not need to run at a constant 120 fps to be smoother, if it runs at say 70 or 80 frames then it is already a marked improvement on 60 maximum. The argument on what the human eye can see in terms of fps has been raged time and time again so I will not go into that. But there is no doubt that I can personally tell the difference between 60 fps and 80. The point of the 120 Hz monitor is not to run at a constant 120fps in game, it is to eliminate the restriction of the 60 fps cap.

As to making a 'system snappy' I never said that, but it does make your desktop and desktop windows and programs more fluid, as soon as I fired up my 120Hz monitor I could tell the difference, and it was dramatic.

If you want to get a more professional opinion on 120hz monitors, and specifically the Asus model, Anandtech did a great review on it a few months back, it was part of the reason I purchased it in the first place.

The Asus, LG, Alienware and BenQ are all the leading models right now. I'd say grab whichever is cheapest or has features you want.

I'm glad you asked!

The BenQ is the most instersting since its LED back-lit, but I havent seen a review yet that tests, input lag, response time (crystal twisting), black level, gradient smoothness (so far all TN panels are 6bit per color and uses interpolation) and contrast of this monitor.


Theres plenty of reports that say 120hz is very noticable even in windows.

The ASUS VG236H was my first exposure to 120Hz refresh displays that aren’t CRTs, and the difference is about as subtle as a dump truck driving through your living room. I spent the first half hour seriously just dragging windows back and forth across the desktop - from a 120Hz display to a 60Hz, stunned at how smooth and different 120Hz was. Yeah, it’s that different.

Stay away from Asus VG236H unless you wanto compromise dynamic range by increasing gamma digitally in-game

The display was equally unable to separate very dark grays from absolute black. As a result, we had a difficult time seeing what was happening in the Blu-ray version of Watchmen’s opening fight sequence.

I assume you use a 500hz usb mouse?

^^ I'm actually using a Logitech G5 right now; I never got into quake, so I never learned WSAD (I use the keypad for movement still...). Having lots of buttons on the mouse makes up for bad button placement near the keypad on the keyboard.

Wow, we still don't have more options for 120hz monitors? That's just kinda depressing :-\

From what I saw earlier, the Alienware used to be the best. You can only get it on the dell site, but it's almost always on sale for varying amounts anyway. Really though we need more, including ledlcd and options for hdmi and displayport along with dvid.
