I've recently built a new machine with 164gb HD. I partitoned it into 5
partitions, the first being 32 gb, where I installed XP Pro SP1. After the
install however none of the rest of the drive space has been available. I've
re-installed, repaired, FDISKed and tried Partiton Magic but still cant find
the other 130 Gb. The BIOS only sees the 32 gb as well.....any help would be
appreciated......do I need to update the BIOS?

No, you need to format it in NTFS.

Ive lost a few drives so Ive done reasearch...Broke a few
windows... Your boot configuration is at the very
beginning of your C: drive (MBR) master boot record this
is the index for all the files on the drive, the mbr is on
you active partition which you can only have one of... And
your active partition Must be on the first segment of
drive C: you can have many primary drives (bootable)and
many logical Drives (a file of a primary). Partition Magic
manuals will explain fully. Go slow to not make mistakes
and if you do (Like me) software like Active Uneraser can
read the drives and correct even if Part.Mag and Windows
repair cannot. You can edit buy unhiding windows system
files and hidden files or using dos but make sure you know
that you must back up any files that are important! YOU
COULD LOOSE ALL!!!!! if you make a mistake.... Always
remember that there is allways more than one way to cook
the goose....This is my mbr with no extra drive attached.
Drives
C:&D:

[bootloader]
timeout=30
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="" Microsoft
Windows XP Home
Edition"" /fstdetect

I keep a copy of this text and copy and paste
to the boot ini.txt file in The C: drive in case I screw
up. Yours might be different so you cannot copy and paste
mine to
yours...Aloha..

Mandatory use of NTFS is not required.

Make sure you've jumped the device properly (make sure the orientation of
the device is correct before you change the jumper settings).

It sounds like you've artificially limited your hard drive to 32 gigs (this
option is usually offered for motherboards that can't access more than 32
gigs due to having an out of date hard drive controller).

If you are certain you've jumpered the hard drive properly, check to see
that you have an up to date bios that supports LBA48.

Correct. NTFS can format volumes up to 64 TB - 64k. FAT32 can format
volumes up to 2 TB. Windows XP and Windows 2000 do a good job at
preventing the user from formatting drives larger than 32 GB as FAT32
though.

Also, when formatting with FAT32 in the XP Setup, you are limited to
32GB per FAT32 partitions. I would highly recommend using NTFS. If you
have nothing on the drive that you care about, I would boot off your XP
CD again, delete all partitions in the XP Setup, create a new partition
and format the whole thing as NTFS.

Make sure you have at least Service Pack 1 for Windows XP integrated
into your XP CD before trying this or you will only get 127 GB for your
partition. To integrate a service pack into Windows XP, I highly
recommend this:
