144hz monitor but fps of 60-150

So I got a 144hz monitor from my uncle, some older games I hit over 144fps so I know it's effective there, but for example in far cry 4, with in game settings set to 144, I get around 60-90 fps, is it not worth the load increase on my card, and should I change the nividia control panel settings back to 60hz for games which don't provide a high enough frame rate?

By setting the fps limit would that just be a case of enabling vsync or by other means? Thanks for the response btw

Some games have FPS settings in their own menus, from which you can choose to use either max FPS or, sometimes a specific target. VSync is for if your FPS is higher than your monitor refresh rate; it then limits the FPS to refresh rate of the monitor. In your case, I would just set the refresh rate to 60Hz for those games that 144FPS in unattainable in. In all honesty unless you have superhuman eyes, it's unlikely that the 144Hz monitor made that much of a difference. 144Hz is faster than your eyes refresh the image going into your brain. That's about 60Hz.

So yes, I'd just not use the extra refresh rate on games that you can't get to that FPS on anyway. Setting an FPS limit might also work, I must confess I don't know enough to say, but I know that coming back to 60Hz should work. Sorry the 144Hz thing didn't work out for you, but like I said, it shouldn't be any great loss.

You're input has been extremely helpful, so you don't have to apologise for your knowledge, I suppose it will come in handy for older games/ones that get above the standard fps. . So long as this reduces the tearing/stuttering it will be fine
