So I splurged and got a commercial 19" monitor (Compaq P910) from a local
surplus store. Assuming it doesn't blow up any time soon, this thing is
pretty sweet! I'm comfortably at 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz, but it can go up to
1920x1440 @ 70 Hz (although I haven't worked out the modeline to get it
out of 60 Hz at that resolution). It was slightly more expensive than my
17" monitor was a few years ago.

Now I know why I like CRT better - all the 19" LCDs I looked at had a max
res of 1280x1024 with the funky 5:4 aspect ratio to boot (which makes it
kinda pointless to watch widescreen movies). Not to mention about 3x the
price.

And it was only about 4 years ago that I had a dinky 14" monitor that
wouldn't go above 640x480 in Windows (although it worked fine at 800x600
in Linux).

Viva la Resolution!

Ahhh. The beauty of 1600x1200.
I have 2 Samsung 19" Syncmasters. Together they cost me less as I gave
for my last 17" 6 or 7 years ago 4600 NOK (approximately 600$)

I got my first 17" from work - it cost approximately 2000$ back in '93.

But I started computing on a 12" monitor. Those were the days - NOT!

pibbur who still remember the 20 MB hard disk he considered buying in
1984. At 20,000 NOK (3600$). He didn't buy it.

Pffft. No one needs hard drives as long as the teletype terminal has
paper!

What about Space or heat dissipation?

(I am typing this on a 19" LCD with a 15" LCD for all the
chat-messenging-mudding stuff).

Pfft. There is no need for paper as long as you have stones and harder
stones.

There is either a typo in here, or you have a really long, thin screen.

And here I was proud of how I can now use 1024x.

Actually, I can probably go higher, but then everything'd be so tiny. I
think this is a 17".

Yeah, some day the kids will stand gape-jawed when I tell them I spent
$150 for a 250GB HD. ("But you can buy a terabyte flash drive at the

Hmm... I never actually did the math but a 19" LCD has a viewable width of
around 376mm (assuming 1.25:1 aspect) whereas a 19" CRT with 18" viewable
has a viewable width of around 365 mm even though it has a wider aspect
ratio of 1.33:1.

Oh well, I still didn't have 3x as much money to spend :)

I used to use 1152x864 just to get the extra 128 pixels width and I
thought it was just about perfect for 17". If the monitor had a decent
refresh rate at 1280x960 I'm sure I'd use that instead...

I still remember it that my cousin's computer was like 8 MHz on Turbo mode
(anybody still remember turbo button on your computer case?).

Yep. North and South was only playable with turbo turned off.

And the Ultima 6 sound system would only work without the turbo mode
(on 486s, anyway). I still say that the effects were tuned for 6MHz

Bergholt Stuttley Johnson AKA Bloody Stupid Johnson, is a(n) (in)famous
architect/designer in Ankh-Morpork, a major city in Terry Pratchett's
famous and very funny Discworld books. He had a problem with scales and
measurements.

- a saltshaker has room for four families
- his Collosus of Ankh-Morpork is stored for protection in a matchbox.

The reason for my reference to him was the ornamental fish pond he
constructed in the Patrician's guarden: 150 feet long and 1 inch wide.

You can find more about him and other Discworld characters here:
