I have a 19'' LG monitor (a very good one i might add) and as a gamer I fear I am falling behind and will have to upgrade my monitor to a larger size.. I hate that thought cause no larger size (well priced) 20sumtin inch LCD is going to surpass the quality picture my (fairly pricey) 19'' monitor has. And to top it off I only bought less than a year ago! Is it really neccessary for me to go and buy a bigger monitor to keep up with the times or will my 19'' (1280x1024 max res) be okay to last the next year or so? I will already doing a major system upgrade, with an 8800GTX in the mix, early next year so I really do not want to have to upgrade my monitor aswell!! I do have a 32'' Sony (V series) HDTV but I am not exactly sure if it would work well as a gaming monitor or work at all... Havnt tried it out yet. Yeah theres another question, do any gamers here use HDTV's for their high-end PC gaming? And is there anyone with a similar TV as mine? I just hope I wont have to buy a new monitor....

I just tried out my Sony 32'' HDTV with my PC and I don't believe it. It only displays a max of 1366x768!!!! Thats no dam better than 1280x1024 for christs sake!! This as hit me hard, one of the main reasons I got this TV was for use as a PC gaming monitor!

Yeah... unless your HDTV does 1920x1080 you're wasting ur time. No offense, but I can't belive you bought a 32 inch Sony 720P HDTV. That's like buying a Ferrari with no engine in it. I hope you didn't pay too much.

Aaaaaaaanyways, yeah 19inch screens are the new 17 inch. Especially this holiday season.... 22inch widescreen LCD's can be had for around $350 or less.

As far as gaming goes, 1280x1024 is the new 1024x768... if you really want good looking games it seems 1600x1200 is sort of the new standard for middle to high end gaming.

But that's just my opinion... maybe I'm jaded.

Yeah 🙁 Well theres no way I am getting a new LCD monitor now so im stuck with my 19''. When you say 22inch monitors can be had for $350 or less that pretty much translates to a ripp off price of E450 ($600) for those here in Ireland  🙁 so theres no way... And yes I did spend a hell of alot on the TV cause once again I have to pay Irish prices! Worst in the world. I'm really pee'd off right now...

I'm in the USA and have been wondering why you folks in Europe have to pay such high prices for electronics. The currency differential doesn't explain it, can you?

I cant really explain but it's pretty much just higher taxes on products I think. Thats at least one of the problems. It's not the whole of Europe thats suffers as bad as some places. Ireland is one of the most expensive contries in the EU. I just wanna get out.....

Just fishing for ideas here... but can't you buy a monitor off of eBay? At least that way you'd pay USA prices + shipping across the pond... what's that, about $40? That would still save you the equivalent of $200 US, or so....

Yeah thats a good idea, but i would have to make sure its a new monitor as i don't like the thought of a second hand LCD. I'm still thinking of doing that. I dunno about shipping as cheap as $40 thought. For something the weight of an LCD monitor it will probly be more, but it will still end up a lot cheaper anyway so yeah ill browse around on eBay and if im lucky enough to find a good quality (but cheap) 20something inch monitor i'll grab it. Thanks for the suggestion. Any certain brand you suggest I keep an eye out for?

You are certainly at a disadvantage, so keep that in mind with your pricing...

My favorite brands are NEC, Planar, Samsung, and Dell (I have some Dells, but I'm not thrilled with the chip they use to control the panel)... if you don't get one of these, suggest you play for "really cheap"... at least if you get hosed on "cheap", it will be for a small amount. 😀

Good luck,

Hose

I found a very well priced Samsung Syncmaster 225BW monitor (22'') on eBay. No Buyitnow price but the bidding so far is nice and low. What do you think about this monitor? Here it is on the Samsung website: http://www.samsung.com/Products/Monitor/LCD_Digital/LS22DPWCBQXAA.asp

*UPDATE* - After some LCD research I have come across the Samsung 215tw 21'' monitor. It has so much more positive review's than the 225W and although it's alot more expensive I will probly wait a couple of months and get it. I read its excellent for gaming, general use, movies and pretty much everything (which is unusual). The native res is 1680x1050. It looks like I may have found the one. What do you think about this monitor? And importantly will the size be okay?

I have a pretty high end pc. some may disagree. my specs are:
x1900xtx
x2 4400+
320 gb hd
DFI lanparty ut 3200 CF
2 gb ocz ram
(for the basics)

i game ALOT!

I just aquired a 37" westinghouse 1080p lcd TV. I do resolutions of 1920x1080 (can only get that w/ a 1080p monitor/tv. IT looks fantastic. I play BF2 and 2142 and CoH at full everything no ghosting or anything. perfect. So my advice is, if ou wanna go big (bigger than what a regular (real) monitor will give you, go with a 1080p tv.
Take it or leave it, thats my spiel.
