Hi

I have been having a problem with my graphics card where the display will randomly corrupt and display weird black/white/brown lines all over the place. Sometimes the lines are attached to an object in the game world, other times the lines seem to float in the air - its a very bizarre thing to see and explain.

I first noticed this playing FEAR Combat, but I discounted it to being a problem specific to FEAR and didn't worry about it. I downloaded the 6.8 cats to try and fix the problem but these did not help, I tolerated the bug because it would only occur on a few specific maps (for those of you that have played FEAR, one of the maps I have problems on is Deadwood).

I next noticed the same problem when playing the Dark Messiah demo, this game runs on an entirely different engine to FEAR so now I became suspicious. The problem appeard to be exactly the same as what I was seeing in FEAR, random lines appearing in the game and obstructing my view.

The third game I have noticed this problem in is Quake4, I recently downloaded the latest patches to start playing again. After playing no more than 5 minutes I start to see the same corruption as I saw in the other games.

Here are some screenshots to give you an idea of what I am talking about, seeing as my description is so hopeless:

Quake4

Quake4

Dark Messiah Demo

FEAR Combat

- The lines appear after a short amount of time being in game, for all three games that I tested.
- The lines seem to occupy a certain area of the map I'm playing and do not move around randomly.
- The lines sometimes 'attatch' themselves to the centre of the screen where my crosshair is and follow my view around.
- My card operates at load at around 70c, this is pretty normal for a radeon AFAIK so I do not think this is overheating.

Here are my computer specs:

Note I am using a single XFire slave card.

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music
FSP Sparkle FX700-GLN Epsilon 700W ATX2.0 PSU
Asus ATI Radeon EAX-X1900 XT-X 512MB
Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe Crossfire
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+
Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB)

I have contacted ATI about this and waiting for a response.

If anyone has any idea what this could be I would be very grateful to know.

Thanks

I noticed similar display corruption on Far Cry recently due to geometry instancing being auto loaded to 1 in the game system every time it loaded a map. A manual force to 0 resolved the issue.

I would go out on a limb, and ask whether you are forcing the geometry instancing option with software like AtiTool or Ati Tray Tools?

You are running in a really low resolution. What happens when you run 1280x1024?

I run in 1600x1200, I resized the images for uploading.

I dont use ATI tray tools and I have never seen an option like that before. I posted this question on another board and the general concensus is that the card is faulty, probably the memory.

Thanks for the replies

im experiansing the exact same problems

I mainly play wow but i have expireanced it here

im runnin

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music
Connect3d ATI Radeon EAX-X1900 XT-X 512MB
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL)
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-062-GI)
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
(CP-128-IN)

I ahve also updated my Mboard to version 4 bios. which fixex Graphics card compatabilty and it still does it)

Ive jsut bought the system and made sure all drivers are the latest on all of my components

1 thing i have noticed is. It does it randomly. and when it does i can ALT TAB and it will RE-SET it back to normal.

or just close the software and reload it and its ok.

ive tried a full demo test on 3d mark (latest version) and it dident do it.

im testing more this weekend. anyone able to fix this?......
i was considing sending it back thinking it was faulty.

Before i was running on a 9800 pro AGP and the same trouble happened often in World of warcraft, COD2 and few other game. Ive don ALL possible update and... nothing changed. Ive buyed a 1900XTX few day ago i runned 3D mark 06 and the same trouble happened but only in the part with the big underwater dragon jump over the ship! I really dont know why this happend but its very bad and ATI cant help us they say to update the drivers ... So if anyone know what to do tell it :)

Hehe i dont want to be bad but my Radeon was doin the same thing exactly the same and after around 3 month the GPU Blowed. ATI said i have overclocked it and all that stuff ... Lol i dont even know how to overclock and i dont want too just like the easy setting and when you buy a high end card you have to have the performance without bein on obligation to OC it. I used ATI Tools, tried to reset drivers install remove catalyst nothing worked, soon after the GPU recover have begin to reset GPU time to time and one day... nothing ! Finnaly they never applied the warranty saying if you overclock warranty not applicable. Damn you ATI you lost a customer!

Maybe look at the leader for help..NVIDIA=GOD!!!!!!!!!!
I've had radeon in the past and they only play fair on certain mobos....Don't realy know why?
But i've never had troubles with nvidia...so there's my 2 cents!

You own a Geforce 7 series card and are saying Nvidia = god? The X1900XTX is not only faster than your 7950GT, but it also supports higher quality anisotropic filtering and HDR+AA. :sarcastic: Just a case of bad luck with a faulty card.

To the OP: I had some similar problems with my 1900 XTX, with the added problem of occasional lockups. Turned out that the memory chips had fried. I can't totally blame the card though, as I was overclocking it. :pfff: I put the experience down as being "If you play with fire, sometimes you're going to get burned". :ouch: An expensive lesson, no doubt.

i had video issues (random odd placement of textures n weird colors, all in games) - purchased a new card - still had video issues - upgraded my motherboard and the video issues went away.

it's not always the video card needless to say....

Thanks for your informed opinion.

Wrong, I 'upgraded' my evga 7900 gt co 256 mb to an ATI x1900xtx 512 mb, not only is the 7900 faster in every single game play, it's much more stable, artifacts almost none at all vs the ati, which I saw similar probples to the OP, and worse.

Pull the ATI and get a $120 used 7900 gt, you'll never go back.

--edit--

I also have never overclocked the card
