Hello

Just the other day i got some weird slow downs and some weird stutters in my games and desktop use. Didnt think much of it as i have HDD from like 5 years ago, but then I started having trouble with starting up my pc as it would take hours and when it did start it takes 5 min for me to perform a action (right click). I got to task manager and saw my disk usage is at 50% consistent, no dips. I managed to update my windows but it made my problem just more inconsistent. Sometimes i could do everything normally other times id have to wait 5-10 min for a right click or opening a program (disk usage stayed at 50% all the time). I dont know guys is there something i could do or should i let go and get a 1TB ssd ?

Feel free to ask any questions.

Solution
I was in a similair situation as you. I had a 750GB HDD but with a 3rd Gen i5 processor. To boot my computer took 30min to an hour until the 100% disk usage use went away. Then it became useable, after whatever was making it active calmed down. I had this issue for a while and one day I decided to look into it and found that my solution to fix it would be to install an SSD (did it actually this week).

I as well used Crystaldiskinfo, and had a caution just like yourself with bad sector.

I was recommended to try "Hard Disk Sentinel" to check my health of my HDD and I did. I found that program to be a bit more detailed and useful. It gives you the exact same errors but also gives you a percentage health and estimated lifetime and a...
Could you post your system components or system model.
Your HDD might be on it way out.
These days, with the affordability, you should have a SSD even if the HDD was performing OK.

Download CrystalDiskInfo (zip version) and check your HDD health.

My specs:
I5-4460
16gb ddr3 ram
Rtx 2070 super
700w PSU
Gigabyte B85M-D3H

HDD: WD 1.0TB WD10EZEX

I dont know what to tell you about runing a tool, it takes me 1-2 hours to boot my pc let alone download anything. Il keep u up to date when i do run the tool

A system taking a long time to boot is often indicative of either corruption, and/or, actual hard drive pending failure...

CrystalDiskInfo will tell if there are any noted SMART errors....

Any move from HDD to SSD is 5 years overdue anyway with current SATA 500GB/1 TB SSDs at only ~$65/$99, respectively...

That's a bit underwhelming specs you have there, for CPU obviously.
Buy a new SSD, installing new OS. it'll solve your problem right away
That parts list should not result in a 1 hour boot time.
Given a normal fully functional drive and software install, that should be maybe 1-2 minutes.

Replacing the HDD with SSD and a clean install will almost certainly "fix it", but without knowing what the actual problem was.
Might be the drive, might be the software.

But that parts list was completely mainstream not that long ago.

1. :1TB HDD super slow (takes hours to boot)"
2. Reallocated sector count.

You can try a full wipe and reinstall, but that drive looks to be on its way out.

You should always be prepared for physical drive fail.
Ok thank you, i wont take up any more of your time. I have 2 more questions. Would you recommend me a Samsung 860 evo 1tb ssd ? And is there a way for my data to be transferred to that SSD

Yes and yes maybe.

The 'maybe' is a case of how corrupted the current data is.
There are many migration tools (and I have a tested series of steps and the tool to do it), but if the source data is corrupt, you're just moving bad data from one drive to another.

I was recommended to try "Hard Disk Sentinel" to check my health of my HDD and I did. I found that program to be a bit more detailed and useful. It gives you the exact same errors but also gives you a percentage health and estimated lifetime and a summary of what the underlining issue may be, and whether it is serious or not. Mine ended up being 99% healthy with over 1000 estimated days. Someone else posted his drive with 45 percent and 69 days. I would recommend for you to give that a try before throwing out you HDD.

I would definitely migrate to SSD. My computer is way faster now, and boots within seconds. As I login to windows, it's useful under 10 seconds. Fixed all my problems.

If you absolutely aren't able to use your HDD, it'll be very hard for you to clone it. So do a fresh install, and just use your HDD as storage in conjunction to your SSD. (not sure how your HDD is organized, whether it is partitioned with OS only and data on another partition like mine was, so it was easier for me to just format the OS partition and keep the rest).

If you are able to use it once your drives calms down like mine did. Try and clone it. People here may recommend Macrium Reflect, and I did try and use it. But it failed due to my bad sectors I think. I ended up using easeus todo, it had no errors. And my SSD seems to be working with no issues at all.

Let me know what's your HDD health status with the program I recommended. And how you want to do proceed. I have been in your situation literally last/this week so I can walk you through it if you wish.

Cheers

OK il try that out and give u an update 😀

Hello everyone

I did another scan using Hard Disk Sentinel and here are the results.
In my opinion they dont look so bad 😭

View: https://imgur.com/a/2ZBOOyP

I can't see the image clearly since I guess imgur made the resolution worse. But it looks like your health is almost 0% and you got about 2 days of hard drive life?

Yeah I think your HDD is kaput, done lol.

I recommend you back it up ASAP, meaning all of your important files. Then create an image of your HDD is alive as a backup.

If you can then try to migrate if it still works. You might have to do a clean install if the cloning process fails or the HDD does before.

That is literally telling you the drive is near death.

Ignore it at your peril.
I dont think you understand sarcasm.
"In my opinion they dont look so bad " (its at 2% ofc its bad and ofc its dying)
(P.S i got nothing against you but can you please leave my posts alone, your answers are vague and most of the time you mock me. Please do not waste my time)

Thank you

sarcasm does not travel well over the ether.
I've seen other people here, with those same results, wanting to keep that drive alive.

Good luck.

No problem. Good luck.

I just saw your image in high definition (I downloaded the imgur app). It looks like you have a lot of bad sectors. Honestly I don't think cloning will work for you.

My drive had 1 bad sector and Macrium failed on me. You could try it since you got nothing to lose. But backup your stuff first.

I used easeus todo backup to clone mine.

Cheers

I know you don't realize this, so I'm going to explain it to you because I have a feeling you'll be making more posts at some point. The person you are asking to "leave your posts alone" happens to probably be one of the ABSOLUTE most knowledgeable people around when it comes to systems and especially storage devices, and is in fact the second highest ranked member of the site in it's entire 24 year history, more or less.

The fact that you you don't understand the information you are being given is YOUR shortcoming, not the shortcoming of the person giving it to you. I see nothing in any post here that is either mocking your nor is vague. I think you are simply unable to understand the advice so you automatically think somebody must be teasing or making fun of you, which they are not.

You have literally taken the advice of somebody who is brand new here and based on their posts, is probably not significantly more knowledgeable than you are (No offense intended Jmusic) in this area, over that which was offered by somebody who even some of the MOST knowledgeable members here and elsewhere, including in the highest branches of our military, listen to when they have problems.

It is literally like taking the advice of some guy "who has a doctor in the family" over the advice of an actual doctor.

Fortunately, in this case, the advice Jmusic offered happens to coincide exactly with what USAFRet told you, so there is really no conflict, but it's awfully strange that two people can tell you the same thing and you thank one of them while telling the other to shove off. Seems rude and unappreciative to me, and that's without even factoring in that the person you were rude to is a site moderator.

Jmusic88 has been very nice and helpful he has explained everything using 575 words and showed me all my options and was clear so even a idiot like myself can understand.
USAFRet has used 208 words his answers where short, vague and left me scratching my head. For a expert he really doesn't show it

1. "You have literally taken the advice of somebody who is brand new here and based on their posts, is probably not significantly more knowledgeable than you are (No offense intended Jmusic) in this area, over that which was offered by somebody who even some of the MOST knowledgeable members here and elsewhere, including in the highest branches of our military, listen to when they have problems."

So because he is new here that means he has no knowledge of the topic at hand and cant offer any support?
But because one of your buddy's has been here longer his voice has more weight ?
Well i doubt USAFRet works for Western Digital. YES we came to the same conclusion, but what matters was the journey to the conclusion. If you really are so knowledgeable and "A EXPERT" show it, explain in detail, give more options do not waste peoples time by making them fish all the knowledge you have out of you and when you come to the conclusion "Your drive is dying. Look to replacing it." elaborate on it so someone who has less knowledge can understand and thank you for it properly.

2. "factoring in that the person you were rude to is a site moderator. "

So because he is a site moderator i cant ask him politely to not comment on my posts ? (if it came off rude i apologize it was not my intent)
Or is it because i have not marked him as best answer ?

3. "It is literally like taking the advice of some guy "who has a doctor in the family" over the advice of an actual doctor. "
"factoring in that the person you were rude to is a site moderator. "
"You have literally taken the advice of somebody who is brand new here"

That is called being unbiased.
Throughout this entire time i have been unbiased and have judged the answers not by rank or status but by the information provided and by the person who could elaborate my problem best and make me grasp what is happening. To be honest i already knew that my HDD was at its end (i mean its inevitable after 4-5 years of use), but what i came here for where answers as I am not as informed in storage as other people.

Because you named my shortcoming I would like to name yours, your shortcoming Darkbreez will be your hubris.
I again apologize if i spat in the face of you "military branch" it was not my intent.
The real MVP here is Jmusic88 i hope you moderators can take a few examples from his reply's and incorporate it into your own.
And I hope that we can "Throw our axes in honey"which means make peace.
