I use 2.5" 2TB hard drives for backups. I typically get Seagate drives from Amazon but it appears that they no longer sell them. Other sellers still do, but the Seagate warranty won't be honored if I buy from them. I checked all of the authorized resellers on Seagate's website and none of them sell these anymore. Seems to also be true of WD drives. I can get 3.5" drives, but they are too big for backups I keep in a Safe Deposit Box. Is this the end of 2.5" drives?

Probably yes. There is no longer any demand for 2.5" drives. Laptops use M2 drives and even the cheapest laptops use 2.5" SSD drives. 3.5" drives are used by desktops, and they are superior to 2.5" HD drives by all means.

2TB spinning drives in 2.5 inch have been replaced by solid state. No longer a profitable market for those devices.

If you need new ones, how are you using these 2.5" drives as backups?
These are not replacements. They are primarily used to make multiple backups of my constantly growing sound libraries. Also for multiple computer backups of their internal SSDs.

I like having many smaller drives instead of a few giant drives, as it allows backups to be done from multiple computers in parallel, saving time. There is also the "all of your eggs in one basket" situation. I've had very good luck with my 2.5" drives. I've never lost anything.

As 2.5" HDDs are going away, there is little reason to not move to 3.5".

But I'll ask....these drives do not hold the only copy of this data, correct?

Do you know for a fact that they are going away? I've tried to find confirmation of that and couldn't.

No, they're not the only copies. I have two sets of backups . . . three of some things. I keep one copy in a Safe Deposit Box at a bank within walking distance of my house. If something takes out the bank and my house, I doubt that I'll be around to care. :)

Fact?
No.

But it only makes manufacturing sense.

The only real place for 2.5" HDDs is in laptops.
Which are rapidly moving to solid state only.

And given your inability to find some from your manufacturer of choice, Seagate....that does not bode well.

I agree. But, although I couldn't find any at Amazon for over a week, I suddenly found that they had 2TB WD drives in stock. So, I bought four of them. That should hold me for a while.

Thanks, all!
