2-in-1 modem and router?

I am looking into getting service with TimeWarner Cable and i see that i would need a new modem and router. Ive seen people comment that 2-in-1 modem and routers are not recommended, why is that?

The router's built into modems are usually very basic, don't allow much config, wifi usually isn't that strong on them.

By "strong" do you mean distance wise? Because i dont really need it to have a huge distance and i also dont need much config.

I most cases the problem is that they are getting to hot and disconnect.

I know that's what happened to two different Motorola models my clients had.

I always prefer a separate modem and router since they run cooler and it is easier to troubleshoot when you have network problems.

I use Motorola SB6121 and SB6141 modem at my house and my client's locations.
