hi
im looking to build a decent gaming rig for under $2000 (i dont necessarily want to spend it all) so basically i want the best bang for my buck and future proof as much as possible. for games i have been dealing with (currently) 20 fps in wow on the lowest settings so im looking at a major improvement. i want to be able to play new/er games but not necessarily at the highest quality possible. i multitask a ton and i listen to music a lot, however i dont need a crap load of storage space as im currently working with 60gb internal and a 120gb external only used for backups. so far all i know is that i would prefer a quad core and 4gb+ of ram.

i would like to base my build somewhat off of this. i need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, usb wireless adapter just fyi. i have heard asus is on the pricey side so any equally reliable and equal performance product let me know.

basically i need to get the above build into my budget. what im looking at currently is dropping 1 of the gpu's, dropping the larger 7200 hdd, speakers, extra case fans, fan controller, xbox controller, router, sound card, headset, mouse, and downsizing the PSU.
that build would look something along the lines of this:

any questions just ask.

thank you.

edit: also wondering what the performance boost of i7 will be and how much i7 items (motherboard, ram, cpu) would cost.

For starters get a Q9550 saves you $220. Do you really need a 300gb velociRaptor? And that powersupply is overkill unless you plan on crossfiring sometime down the road. Also, do you really need vista ultimate?

Here:

Mobo: Maximus Rampage
CPU: Q9550
GPU: 4870x2
Ram: 4 gigs is plenty and u can add more later so get a good Mushkin DDR2 800 or 1000 kit

Case: Get that TT or the Antec 1200 if u want full tower

PSU: go with the HX 1000 it has PLENTY of power and is better build quality and cheaper....that ABS 1300 is completely overkill

Monitor: U need a 26"??? A 22" is fairly large, will give much better performance and a fraction of the price. Samsung or HPs are good.
If u need HD then i could see that....just realized the Bluray player

HD: Do u need a 10k hard drive. From what ive read about ur previous computer...a 10k drive is TOTALLY unnecessary for u. Get the WD 640 AAKS its good $$/GB and is fast

OS: go with an OEM its much cheaper. Also do u need Ultimate?? it has some extra security features that for a home user are usually unnecessary. I say go with Home Premium 64 bit

Nothing wrong with a big monitor. I have a 28" viewsonic, its sexy =P.

Sure the pixel size is bigger than a 24", but its got smaller pixels than a 1080p 32", so who cares.

alright well my current build has the 1000hx, keeps the TT case, i am willing to downsize my monitor if necessary but 26" is preferred, i cant find the maximus rampage on newegg...

what prices will a complete i7 setup cost?

will the performance increase be worth the cost?

will the first released i7 be decent? ive heard they wont be releasing "desktop" i7 processors until well into 2009...

eh....i dont think so to i7

I mean the 2.66 is scheduled to be around $284 but i bet that prices will be higher.
Next ull need DDR3 which is expensive atm but it might change.
and then ull need an X58 board which i could see easily in the $300+ range. They are going to be expensive

IMHO, go with a good Quad and go by Nehalem straight to Westmere or Sandy Bridge

alright thanks for the advice. i think i will wait till the release of i7 because of the price drops that i figure will effect quads, x48, ddr2 etc.

i already have rampage formula on my build.

true... i hope it drops as much as the first quads did when the core 2 quads came out. an extra $350+ would be greatly enjoyed.
