$2250 New Gaming Build

Hi,

I am building a computer for my son now that I have some experience. I am looking for one around $2250. I have already picked the Intel Core i7 920 processor, HAF 932 Case, Corsair 750W Power Supply and dont need a mouse, keyboard, speakers etc. I do need a monitor though. If anyone has any system ideas please let me know.

What about the motherboard, the ram and especially the graphics card? For monitors, I'd go with a 24" that has a 5ms response gray-to-gray, and that it's 16:10. Although, if you're going to watch movies and play games, you can save a hundred dollars and get a 16:9. Today 24" screens are very cheap (about 350$ here in Canada) so I see no reason to take less.

Meh I changed my mind on the PSU. Go with the 750tx or 850tx. I guess the 700w model is better than the 900w model of the UCP.

I recently built a machine for $1505 total, all purchased from newegg. It runs everything I've thrown at it without a hiccup, and I'm running Windows 7 without a problem.
Asus M4N72-E motherboard
AMD Phenom II x4 940
4GB OCZ 1066 memory (OCZ2G10664GK)
Corsair 750TX PSU
2x EVGA GTX 275
250GB 16MB cache SATA HDD
and, for viewing the beautiful imagery this machine creates, an Asus MK241H 24" LCD display.

This setup scores 24k in 3dmark Vantage, and would serve well for years to come. Incidentally, I've got the Phenom clocked to 3.6 on stock cooling via an 18x multiplier at the stock voltage.

Where did you hear the Haf was loud? Its very quiet from what I understand, the large fans don't have to spin as fast to cool it. The Cooler I chose was just to go along with the case, it matches well with the red LED's, but the Xigmatek would be fine too. The V8 is an excellent cooler though.

You obviously have not seen one of those monitors up close. Its worth it. And its a 26", not a 24". The Samsung ToC monitors are top of the line. A 32" monitor would be well over $1200

+1 on xthekidx's monitor.

Also with 2 gpus, i would highly recommend against the antec 900. IMO it just doesn't have enough room. I would suggest sticking with a full tower, either the one xthekidx recommended, or the Cooler Master COSMOS 1000

I've never understood the point to getting a 26 or 28" monitor which has the exact same resolution as a 24". I'd rather have the higher density.

Both the Samsung 305T and HP LP3065 are $1200. (32" would actually be cheaper since it would be a lower resolution LCD or Plasma TV).

28" is too big I think, but 26" is fine. At 24" its alright too, but its a little easier on the eyes if its a little bigger I think. At 28" then the picture gets to be not as sharp but I think 24-26" is just fine for 19x12 res.

Maybe I'm too picky, but I used to run a 19" CRT (basically equivalent to 17" LCD) at 16x12.

After running on 17" CRTs (1280x1024) for quite a long time, I personally don't see any point in having a monitor larger than a 22" LCD WS (1680x1050). At this size...

1. Prices are more competitive.
2. Not as much money has to be spent on graphics cards due to the lower resolution. (More money for processor, and then you upgrade your graphics cards in a couple of years for extended life.)

As such, I look for 22" WS LCDs rated at 2ms GTG refresh rates.

Further, you can even buy two of them and split screen/duel screen if you are so inclined. (I am not one of these people, however.)
