Hey guys, so I'm having issues with the AMD 295x2 throttling when it hits around the 74-75C range. Is there a chance to raise that limit? If not would replacing the thermal paste and possibly the vram thermal pads help at all? Suggestions?

EDIT: Oh forgot to mention that I've already upgrade the radiator fan as well with a Scythe Ultra Kaze

I would recommend taking the heatsink off and giving it a good cleaning and replacing the thermal pads and paste if you have them.

Also, I don't think 75C is very hot for a graphics card. I have seen them in the 90s. I feel you pain. There are BIOS flashes out there that will raise the limit. Be warned, this will void your warranty...

Personally I would think about going custom loop water cooled were you can put a 240mm radiator..

Yeah 75C isn't bad at all, and unfortunately I hang around 74 to 75 when under load :-( So just a few degrees less and I'll be good. It probably does need a good cleaning too, but I do need to look into a BIOS flash.

Yea at 75c that card should not be throttling. Depending on the manufacturer you need to install their software or Asus or Msi's gpu software and adjust your temperature target. Those softwares are free and also allow you to control overclocking and fan speeds.

Thats the problem though, it shouldn't be but it is. From what I've found it seems like everyone has that issue with this card. Or at least from what I've found previously, I was wondering if someone found a way by now to at least "unlock" that. Upping the Power Limit in MSI Afterburner doesn't help either.

I found this...

but I do not see any Skynet ones. They are usually the custom versions. I am not sure which one (if any) will solve your issue. Just be careful to backup your factory BIOS before flashing a new one.

You could do like Azzazel suggested and use something like MSI Afterburner to see if you can set the max power limits higher but from what I have read on other forums, this 75c max limit is a common problem with these cards.

Good luck.

P.S. You are not overclocked are you? This is the GPU temps and not the VRM temps correct?

It was overclocked before but I'm back to defaults and it throttles still. I actually have a 2nd 295x2 in crossfire that doesn't throttle but the temps are around 72-73 under load.

Do you have a picture of your rig? Sounds like you may have some airflow problems.

Not currently, actually at work (of course not working) but the temps are at 100% load, both cards, I figured the temps were decent despite the throttling, and the 2nd card is a bit newer so likely not as "dirty"

Actually I do have a image with the temps and the fluctuations. This is 100% load on all, the first 2 gpu's are the first 295x2 and 3/4 are the 2nd. The 2nd looks like it's actually around 74 under load and no throttling, but the first one max's at about 74 but then throttles and dips a bit then back up. It's pretty consistent too.

I just wanted to see how you have the radiators positioned in your case. You didn't stack them by chance? Also what is the distance between your cards. I know they are liquid cooled but your VRMs are still air cooled which could be adding to the overall temperature.

Radiators are not stacked, they're separate. But yeah there isn't much clearance between the cards, the throttling one is the top card. I'd say an inch, if that, in between.

My nvidia cards in evga precision x have a temp target setting. I can set it to 75c or 70c and the card will throttle and boost fan speed to keep at that temp. Other softwares like afterburner should have a temperature target setting also that you can adjust and get rid of the throttling. Those cards aren't supposed to throttle until closer to90c or something. You may have a faulty card. You could try flashing the bios or contacting the manufacturer of the card and asking for a solution. Who is the cards manufacturer?

Well everywhere I read online it seems like these things do throttle at 75C no matter what, which yeah is odd but I think that's the way they are :-/ maybe it's to prevent the vram from overheating? I dunno, but nah it's not a PSU issue, it's a relatively new EVGA 1600W Platinum.

Ok so yeah it's pretty clear it's a heating issue, still odd that the cutoff is 75C I ran a few tests, and of course I can't help myself with an overclock, I'll do the defaults later today. With the side of the case off it only throttled once about every 5 mins. But with the case on, it was once every min. or so.

So I know there is a hard drive cage that I need to move out of the way that's blocking a good amount of airflow. But ALSO I noticed something strange on GPU4's reading. It seems to be all over the place but GPU3 is the most stable of them all even with the case on.

This specific test was mining software so it does use all gpu's. When I get home later I'll bump it down to default clocks again and test it out with that and actual gpu testing software.
