Hi all

Never posted before but thought this was the best place to ask, which type of monitor do I get and why?

Basically, I recently invested in building myself a new rig all over again. I had previously done this like 4 years ago, but since I'm working in computer games design wanted something a bit more up to date. Also I wanted flawless graphics on all new games and VR (Which I do now get). My system consists of the i7-6700k (not overclocked), Maximus Hero VIII Mobo, 32GB Vengeance RAM, 1000W PSU, GeForce GTX 1080 (MSI), 250 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, 2 TB HDD and Windows 10.

However mainly due to sheer cost, I haven't upgraded my monitors yet. I have a Full HD 32 inch LG TV, and a 23 inch Full HD HP Monitor (x2301 I believe). I know I want to get a new screen of some kind, however I have heard for and against getting both 4K and 2K. I was wondering with all of your guys' expertise what you think would be best. I like to run my games at as higher quality as possible, which is why I am unsure on getting the 4K, however I'm not quite sure if my system would just about be able to squeeze out 60 FPS even for intensive games.

TL😀R - I have a new system, trying to decide between 2K and 4K based off performance.

Cheers!

4k will become more prevalent, so it would behoove you to have that capability.
My suggestion is to buy a large 40" Philips 4k monitor I use the BDM4065UC which runs several games just fine at 60fps using a GTX980ti. I think 60hz is the limit of the monitor .
Actually, If I were to buy today, I would go for the newly announced curved version

Keep your other monitors as side monitors.

I just upgraded to 1440p and am really enjoying it. I upgraded from a 1080p 144hz and the improvement in graphical clarity is significant. That said, I'm also keen on high framerates which is why my new monitor still has 144hz. I think high frames and 1440p is the current sweet spot for gaming and the 1080 is the perfect card for driving that setup. I haven't gamed on 4k so I can't comment on what exactly you're losing out on, but as you pointed out most games will not run at 60 frames in 4k without turning various settings down, so if you value higher framerates and smoother gameplay I'd go with a monitor like mine (XB271HU). In a few cycles we'll see cards that can comfortably run 4k at higher framerates but that time is not now, and there's something about experiencing that 'next' jump in technology that is exciting. 1440p is new and game changing to me right now and in a few years 4k will blow me away just the same. :)
