[SOLVED] 2nd CPU not showing on Task Manager / Resource Monitor

Hello.

I'm new to this site and I hope I can get some help. I was running CyberLink PowerDirector 16 (64-bit) and noticed to much lag on a 4K video during playback.

• I checked the Task Manager (TM) and I noticed that the CPU was running +95%. When looking at the detail I noticed that only one (of the 2) of my CPU's is showing in the TM, all 6 cores working.
• I checked the Resource Monitor (RM) and it only shows CPU 0 to 5.
• I checked the Device Manager and all 12 cores are there. ( Intel Xeon E5645 @ 2.44GHz. 6 cores per CPU)
• I checked the BIOS and the 2 CPUs are there too.

Why can't I use both CPU's?
I used to see/use both CPU's before, even when running the video editor. Nothing happen to the computer.

I do not think Home supports 2 CPU sockets. You need Windows 10 Pro.

Interesting. When I installed the 2nd CPU (about a year ago) I saw both of them working. Also, I saw on the task manager the 12 cores. Why would it all of a sudden stop working?

I just saw that my system was updated to Windows 10 Ver 20H2 on July. Perhaps this is when the 2 CPU stop showing on my Task Manager?

With dual cpus with hyperthreading enabled you would see 24 cores as dual cpus would have been 12c/24t. Unless you had hyperthreading off in the bios.

Thank you for your guidance. I found out that my HPZ800 that I bought had a licence key sticker for Window 7 Pro.
I did not noticed that, in the past, when I upgraded my system to Windows 10 Home.
Per your recommendation, I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro and voila!!!

The E5645 has 6 cores and 12 threads. If you have a pair of them then Windows should be reporting 12 cores and 24 threads.

Your screenshot shows 12 Cores and 12 Logical processors. That means hyper threading is disabled. Check your BIOS settings first to see if hyper threading has been disabled.

When you are back in Windows, run msconfig. Go to the Boot Tab, press the Advanced options... button and make sure Number of processors is not checked. Press OK and reboot so Windows can find all of your cores and logical processors.

How did Windows 10 Home even enter into this scenario? Windows 7 Pro upgrades to Windows 10 Pro for free. The only thing I can think of is you bought W10 Home instead of clicking "upgrade" back in Win7 pro (I know that was displayed very prominently on the desktop for a good while back when Win10 was new). From there you'd probably have to buy a Windows 10 Pro upgrade to get there from Home edition. It sounds like something suboptimal happened during the upgrade process.

Any benchmark is actually good for a relative before and after comparison, but just be sure to use more than one so it's validated on more than one test suite.

Do you have the benchmark software you use?
I've been out of the computer "game" for, like 20 years... This PC I bought it from work for just $50 bucks!

I actually don't. I just use a few free online benchmarks to compare as a 'before and after' if I'm evaluating if something sped up or not. The problem is all these are browser based so a different browser or even version can affect the results:

That was a steal at $50, and that's a great way to get a good computer for cheap. I have a z600 and it's still a beast of a system since I loaded it up with 96GB of ram and a gpu and dual x5750 processors. Got it cheap as someone was upgrading their computer and they originally had gotten this from work so they sold it for $70 shipped!
