So, i currently have an Asus Strix R9 285OC, AMD X4 860k, and 8 gigs on an Asus A88x pro.

I play World of Tanks, Armored Warfare, Fallout 4, and Star Citizen. For the most part, i can run everything on high at 40-60fps. Star Citizen is about the only one i dont maxed. I would like to upgrade so i can run SC maxed.

My question is, do I:
A) Get a second R9 285 to run crossfire,
B) Get a Polaris rx 480,
C) Wait for Zen and upgrade CPU, mobo, and ram, or
D) Wait for Zen, sell everything, and upgrade everything?

note; I am indeed an AMD fanboi, so Nvidia is out, and Intel is out unless Zen turns out to be overpriced.

Solution
In your case it's better to wait for ZEN and see what you want to do after. Xfire 285s will be bottlenecked by your CPU and you don't have very worthy CPUs in AMD's side for now. Yeah probably worth waiting if you can hold onto what you have now (ie lower some detail settings in your game)

my advice fiind a customer to sell the 285 tha overclock youre cpu to 4.3 then buy 480 8gb then play witcher 3 or any other game and raise the resolution to 1440p through vsr to not botleneck then wait for direcx 12 games then forget about the vsr dx12 wont botleneck any cpu

DX12 isn't some magic technology that negates the need for a decent CPU. It does help performance, but an X4 860k is still going to bottleneck. Check out the following: http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/DX12-GPU-and-CPU-Performance-Tested-Ashes-Singularity-Benchmark/Results-Avera

If you look at the results for CPU scaling with the R9 390X (the 480 is speculated to be somewhere close to the 390X in performance), you can see that a CPU like the FX-6300 bottlenecks significantly, and that CPU is at least as powerful as the 860k, if not more so.

The ashes of singularity doesnt scale to good in cpus it obviously has not been implemented dx12 optimizations in terms of cpu botlenecking look best at dx12 bwnchmark in game totar war warhammer look at i3 4360 paired with r9 390 diference dx11 vs dx 12 ashes sucks https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_5p-DQmXfG8N1d5cGNGUE8zY2M/view?usp=drivesdk

Fair enough, average fps does go up a lot. However, minimum fps doesn't increase nearly as much, which will probably mean stuttery gameplay. And moving to an i5 or higher CPU still results in noticeably higher fps, particularly for minimum fps, indicating there is still some bottlenecking going on. And it will be worse with the 860k, as it's weaker than an i3.

Also, there's no guarantee that the performance boosts seen in Warhammer will be representative of all/most dx12 games.

dont talk sheet open youre eyes and loock twice average is upper line and not botom look at 1080x paired with i3 and accept that you werent right dx12 is not a joke it deletes the termin of botllenecking are you from archage now is 2016

power cpu adds much more fps in dx12 is not a secret but adds price for cpu too so is not affordabile for average user an i5 or i7 but it doesnt means if you play a directx 12 on a i3 you will lose a part of performance of youre more powered card dx 12 utilize all resources and eliminate the stagnance of gpu

I originally made a post based on misreading the graphs, and deleted it when I realized my mistake. I'm assuming that's what you're replying to in your first post?

I'm not 100% sure what you're trying to say in the next post, but it looks like you're saying that using an i3 in dx12 will not result in reduced performance with a powerful video card? Well, the benchmarks you posted beg to differ, as clearly the video cards are getting better performance with better CPUs. Now, the performance you do get may still be acceptable, and there may be diminishing returns with the more powerful CPUs, but that doesn't mean that a bottleneck is not occurring.

Look, I'll admit that the results are better than I was expecting (although, again, a single game doesn't prove that those results are going to be the norm for dx12 games). But the 860k is still an entry level gaming CPU, and even if it ends up performing a lot better in dx12, it will limit the performance of some video cards compared to more powerful CPUs , which is the definition of a bottleneck.

Well, that escalated quickly.

I think im going to hold out till Zen drops and upgrade the cpu first. The 285 is dx12 ready, and barely breaks a sweat running any of my games on high settings. I think we all pretty much that my cpu is the weak link at the moment. Unfortunately i need to sort out some cooling issues before i can crank up the wick on the 860k.

Wait for zen, upgrade cpu, go from there.

Thanks all.

860k and a good overclock to 4.3 results a good entry level cpu that paired with r9 380x i played 2k gta 5 ulltra 50-60 fps witcher ultra fullhd 50 60 fps in novigrad 45fps crysis 3 the field scene ultra 30 fps i dont uderstand for comfortabile playng you need 40-50 fps in games 860k overclocked can deliver in dx11 titles this 40-60 fps in dx 12 titles if paired with r9 390 it will deliver 35% boost of fps and games over the time become more demanding on graphics card amd this will nevelate the overpower gpu if you dont have a monitor that is capable 144ghz and has just 60ghz why do you need a good cpu that will 70-90 fpsa that youre monitor doesnt support

Wait on both accounts. Zen should be very decent, though price is an unknown. One of the good things with Zen will also be the new AM4 motherboards. It is likely they will support future CPUs for some time to come so if you get a 6 core now then in 4 - 5 years you should be able to get a very nice upgrade, at least 8 core and then probably a CPU tech beyond the Zen+ (Zen+ is current name for rumored Zen successor/ future refresh).
I am hoping there will be a 480x too for decent 1440p gaming. The $199 4GB VRAM 480 should be great for 1080p.

Either way, it's obvious to me that this day is NOT the rightest time to upgrade PC hardware. Simply because we expect to see many GPU / CPU / Platform refreshes/releases in a span of 1 year (give or take). It is even too early to decide on a RX480 purchase because we don't actually know what Nvidia will put on the table in a couple of months and how those releases will affect prices. There are rumors indicating to a possible release of full line of cards (GP 102, GP106 variants etc plus AMD's possible releases) and like Tollman mentioned, ZEN release may bring some good features with its platform for decent prices. Personally i'd wait till 4th quarter of the year at the minimum, to draw an upgrade plan for the best bang for my money

but the gamers that wanna biuld a pc dont want to wait because the real gamers that play every day they need the pc now i say for now the best budget gpu at 29 june availibille feom partners is polaris RX 480 its obvious that every new serious gpu take places ov higher tier old series gpu so the 480 wil be at least a r9 390 on new arhitecture nvidia will realease new gpu in the end of the year september most probably so for nvidia there is no competition on 1070/1080 and for amd 480 8gb for 249$ power of the gtx970 or 390 there is no competition vega will be releasead amd says at september just like zen till september there are 3 mounths so i dont think real pc biulders will wait just the most patient will wait

and do you think rx480 will be readily available in large quantities at the end of june? i'd doubt that. Put like 1 month more on top of that, and then maybe you can find the card for near its MSRP. You are already in august, then :) But you have a point, gamers needing upgrade could at least wait for the new card (1080, 1070 or rx480) and grab one and then wait for ZEN

gtx1080 after 1 month after release is available from different vendors on computerunivers.net for 630euro without shipping so i think the same will be with polaris the quantities much depend of the amd company and samsung memory supplier if they will supply the vendors with enough gpu chips and memory chips

FYI not even I7's and Titan's can max out that game. It is still in alpha be patient.
