3.5ghz! oh my!

2ghz isn't that impressive because for one you can get a 1.4ghz athlon for 5 times less that of the pentium 4 2ghz.. however! 3.5ghz ..ga'damn! i don't think AMD has any 3ghz chips out anytime soon lol... i bet AMD is crappin there pants right now lol i would be! 3.5ghz!

"Straight from the floor at IDF, read my report on Intel's Pentium 4 (Northwood) running at 3.5GHz as well as the first public demonstration of Hyper-Threading technology.

It's back to work for me... "

i dunno but AMD better come up with something real quick out of there ass otherwise they goin out'a business! Once again intel pulls the stinky magic trick - pulls a chip out of there a$$! lol! gotta give credit where credit due.. intel kicken butt now.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

512kb cache and fixed FPU oh my god

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where is my credit card too

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big deal. IBM had working prototypes of their new technology that would allow chips to go to 170GHZ or 210GHz or whatever in 2 years.

for the public or for the high end huge business server solutions with unlimited budget? :) the 3.5ghz was for the public which should be out next year i would imagine.

AMD chips arent just cheaper, they are ungodly levels of cheaper, and they offer equal(to the end user) performance to the fastest p4, add overclocking into the mix and you get the best chip. Period.

Bah, the HAmmer 2GHz will blow the 2GHz P4 so hard it will be at the other side of the universe.

AMD has been playing reasonably smartly.

Their new technologies thus far don't require major rewriting to take advantage of (3DNow! is an exception) AND their performance is excellent with or without customizing code to the chips.

Intel, with P4 has created an excellent chip in many ways. I certainly have no qualms with saying that. Lots of new technologies, but at a price. (not just monetary) In order for P4 to perform well, it must run code optimized for it.. SSE22 code, for instance. Look at the relatively poor performance of the FPU as an example. P4 gets trounced in FPU because t is trying to pull away from FPU altogether in favor of SSE2.

The long 20 stage pipeline might allow for higher speeds, but P4 takes a huge performance hit to acvcomodate them. (25% hit compared to P3 and 30% compared to Athlon TBird (35% compared to Palomino)) Once Intel ioncorporates Hyperthreading in another year or so, P4 may recoup at least some of that (Up to 30% performance boost per clock, which will get it almost to the clock per clock performance of Palomino.

Interesting way the two companies' technologies are diverging. Each has advantages and disadvantages. AMD has the advantage, currently, of performance while Intel has the advanvtage of clockspeed. Once applications are optimized for P4, the P4 's performance will improve. By then Hammer, and possibly Athlon will include the core circuitry to support the same optimizations and hopefully improve their own performance as well.

I agree w/ grizely1. However, 3.5, then 4 double pumped to 8 GHz will certainly give the clawhammer/ sledgehammer a very tough time. Plus, if the price will be anything like intel's itanium, amd will be in trouble. In a year or two I will be so pissed if amd starts going down the drain.

When I rule the world, Apple will only mean the fruit.

Remember 10ghz in 3 years. AMD hasn't said anything yet. Intels current plan sucks but there future plan looks good. IA64 should get more mainstream i hope die die 32bit i want 64bit IA64.

***LAME POLICE***

This thread has been reviewed and has been awared the Lameness Level TM of:

8.5.

note: with lameness, lower is better., so this post is only a little lame.

3.5Ghz? wow. im gonna march right over to dell and get that processor mated with the following to keep the price below $10,000. 128mb PC600 rdram, tnt2 m64, 15" monitor capable of 1024x768x60hz and a soundblaster vibra.

scarey thing is that this is what more than a few end users get with a budget affordable p4 lol

LoL, yes juin, the 1.4tbird was faster than the 1.8 p4, now the 2.0p4 is equal to the end user, got a problem with that?
