Hi, I previously posted a thread a few years back about going through a potential PC upgrade. To cut the story short I never upgraded and continued to use my PC and work macbook as normal as it suited me.

Now, to cut to today, my PC is starting to fail. It's always beeping (6-7 beeps) on start up, it freezes often, freezes on wake-up, BSOD with a video TDR message and so on.
⚰️ Alienware Aurora 2010 - 2024

I've come to the conclusion I need to make an upgrade

Approximate Purchase Date: ASAP! can wait up to a month if needed
Budget Range: $4,000 USD, but can go higher if it's actually worth it. (I feel like at a certain budget you end up paying 10x more for a 1% improvement and not trying to waste $$)
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Programming/Coding, Surfing the internet, Figma/Photoshop, Video Editing, Some Gaming, little 3ds max/maya
Are you buying a monitor: No (but i can for the pixels... ) Currently have 2x - Asus mx279H . 27 inch. 1920x1080px
Location: NYC

Thanks! i'm probably going to buy at Microcenter since I live 5min from one but can get parts from online/newegg too. Open to anything.

Currently looking at the following:
basic: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/9DYVGP, with a few guesses: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/b9zJDZ
CPU: Intel Core i7-14700K Raptor Lake 3.4GHz Twenty-Core ($369.99 @ Microcenter)
(I also see the 15th gen is coming out later 2024 so I probably won't wait unless it's 1-2 months away.)
CPU Cooler: no clue
GPU: Do i keep my GTX 1080 or upgrade to a GeForce RTX 4070 12GB GDDR6X PCIe 4.0 ($629.99 @ Microcenter)
Motherboard: no clue
Memory: I'd guess at least 4 by 8gb sounds good
Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB
Case: no clue
Power Supply: no clue but at least 850w?

-----

My user benchmark: Userbenchmark

The original computer was an Alienware Aurora from ~2010

Are you carrying anything over from current PC?

Better 2 x 16 than 4 x 8 on the RAM.

If you have any long term notion of 64, better 2 x 32 now, rather than adding 32 later.

At your budget, I'd plan on DDR 5 and you need to make sure you have a DDR 5 compatible motherboard.

Air cooling should be OK if your case airflow is even average. Plausible candidates begin circa 50 bucks.

I'd try to talk myself out of any idea of more than say 250 on the motherboard.

I can carry over the 1080 GTX video card as i don't play Games often.

I can opt for 2 x 16gb as well if that's a better option. My current ram also does the trick so I don't see a need for more.

DDR5 (y) noted.

If you absolutely want to spend +-4k, it doesn't get much better than this for gaming. Can get LG C3 42" monitor or 4080 super instead so it will be under 4k.

Thanks for all the input some really nice finds here. It's so easy to get decision paralysis and be overwhelmed here so appreciate the assistance.

I'm also not going for any specific white/black rgb path but I don't mind spending another $50-100 for lights haha.

This is what I currently have

  • I think the CPU I chose is worth the value. I'm also a Intel and Nvidia person so sticking with these 2 over AMD.
  • For the Cooler I chose the artic freezer which was recommend above. Is the 56.3 better?
  • for the Motherboard is there a reason to spend $10 more on the ASRock B650 Steel Legend. Is it better?
  • I went with corsair for memory since i know the brand and trust it more. should i just stick with 2x16gb though? I'll save a bit of cash too
  • For the Video card i looked at the benchmarks and felt the 4060 or 4070 did the job. Anything more I'd be spending a lot more for what i see is less and less improvement. I'm trying to keep the video card around $500-600 if possible but if there's a significant performance improvement I'll buy a more $$ one.
  • case: I like the 216 ATX one. looks solid!
  • Power Supply: the 850w will do? seems enough
🙏 Thanks!

edit: I also have a 34inch wide screen curved monitor so no upgrade here :)

It's for AMD CPU's

Corsair vengeance have good timings for the money. They have identical looking kits for AMD (Expo) and Intel (XMP), so pick the right one. Small chance 2x16 won't be enough at the moment but you might want more in a few years and it's better to have 2x32 than 4x16 because it might cause problems.
For the Video card i looked at the benchmarks and felt the 4060 or 4070 did the job. Anything more I'd be spending a lot more for what i see is less and less improvement. Best value are 4070ti super and 7900xt imo. A little bit above that price range but depends what games you're going to play and what resolution / settings / raytracing or not. If you don't need much you might be better off buying a second hand GPU for a few 100$ from someone who is upgrading.
Power Supply: the 850w will do? seems enough
Yes, but from what I've read RM*e is not as good as RM*x & RM*x (Shift). The regular RM*x is just older and isn't ATX 3.0. Not sure if you need ATX 3.0 for anything but the most powerful GPU's though.
I also have a 34inch wide screen curved monitor so no upgrade here
The one I posted is QD oled, believe me it is an upgrade. But you probably need 4080 super or 4090 for it to make sense to get one.

For your needs, you will find 32 Gb enough but after a couple of years, maybe you will regret not buying more.
That Mushkin set Helper suggested is a peach (Why_Me found another very nice one), so go for it as it's within your budget.

The 4070 Ti SUper or 4080 Super will last you a decade with your needs. Also they're useful in AI tasks, but that may be besides the point.
The 4060 is good value and pretty capable for non-demanding games. But it's gutless when it comes to demanding games. Going forward, it will become obsolete within 11-12 months (next gen 50XX series are coming out).
If you're sure you don't need GPU firepower, there's a Zotac Twin Edge 4060 going for less than $300 - https://pcpartpicker.com/product/FN...force-rtx-4060-8-gb-video-card-zt-d40600q-10m
You can always swap it in a year if you decide you need something better, and pickings will be better next year too.

Edit - Oh, don't go near 4060 Ti or such. Worthless. Technically better than 4060 but still gutless. Forget them and save your money, or go with a Radeon 7800XT at a similar price.

Treat yourself to a durable power supply: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/nG...ertified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-bn337

As others have said that RAM kit i linked in my build is really great for the price and Mushkin is a reliable brand for RAM. If you want to fit an arctic freezer III AIO into a case you have to get one that is compatible with their unusually thick radiators, I added one such case below. The 4070 ti super IMO is where the value is at for Nvidia graphics cards. anything less is gimped in one way or another or its performance it too low. If all your productivity programs support AMD, I would highly recommend the 7800 XT at 500 dollar if you want to spend less.

Reminds me that I once saw this guy fit a 420 in a lancool 3:

That case would be cheaper and Lian Li makes great cases, idk if ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III is the same size though.

Great! I made a few changes then

  • For the CPU Cooler, an earlier recommendation paired the Arctic III with the Lian Li case. Will that not work? If it doesn't the be quiet will be my next option.
  • I also swapped the memory for Mushkin
  • Video Card also upped to the 4070 ti super
  • Battery also switched to the be quiet but I see the Thermaltake was introduced? Any advantages there?
Thanks for the video too Anom1c! I believe the Lian Li and Artic will fit. They are both 360mm according to the specs... but if the be quiet case is a much better buy I can just make the switch to mitigate any potential issues. Locking in everything by tomorrow to make the order :)

It's this case: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/bmstt6/lian-li-lancool-iii-atx-mid-tower-case-lancool-3-w

Also comes in black and with RGB. I don't know how good the bequiet case is but Lian Li usually comes out on top with multiple cases in benchmarks for noise/CPU&GPU cooling. Also really nice to build in, good engineering.

EDIT:
It should fit in the 216 as well: View: https://imgur.com/FxIDHId

Battery also switched to the be quiet but I see the Thermaltake was introduced? Any advantages there?

Great thanks again for the updates.

Latest is below. Feeling pretty good about this build. Going to pull the trigger on it tomorrow and maybe try to build this thing myself

Have you scrutinized the specification sheets for both boards?

With a fine-toothed comb?

In all likelihood, they differ in features. You need to decide if the differences matter for your particular use.

Differences such as number and type of USB ports; number of NVMe ports; number of chassis fan connectors; BIOS flash capabilities; number and type of monitor connections; VRM quality, etc.

Yea, took a closer look now but they both seem very comparable as does the Gigabyte Elite Wifi7 X but that answers my 'dumb' question earlier haha. I think I should be all set now :)

The build looks very good. Best RAM and cooler possible afaik, I wouldn't spend $100 extra for the color and RGB on the case though. Rather spend more on something else like storage.

Use the GTX1080 for now. And hold off on GPU purchase. RTX5090 releasing in few months is set to get 70%(minimum) uplift in performance over RTX4090. That is a huge gain. Add in as much as you can to the budget and get that. I expect it to cost $1800 and $2000-2100 for high end AIB models.

Yes it is time to upgrade the monitor to 1440p specially with all the HDR games releasing and are set to over time. It be worthy expenditure. No I would not recommend going 4K yet even if being paired with RTX5090 unless you plan to upgrade again in next 4Yrs. At 1440p it will get you the best experience for much longer than that.

Also upgrade the CPU over time when Ryzen 9000X3D chips release Next year. That will go into this motherboard no problem. No need to upgrade the Motherboard or anything else.
