This list of problems is rather weak. Judging by these complaints: Trouble installing, missing custom icons, missing applets, missing Aero, can't sync iPhone, etc. these are probably people who aren't very knowledgeable about computers.

If you are going to document technical issues with anything you should get your info from people who actually know what they are doing.

[citation][nom]Boxa786[/nom]Starting to believe all this banter against Marcus. Sad that a site like this can be so one sided.[/citation]

The data was collected by iYogi. All we're doing is reporting.

[citation][nom]uh_no[/nom]Can it, Yam!at least windows 7 doesn't delete all your data when you log on as a guest....[/citation]

Can what exactly? Defending Windows 7? "Of course, the prevalence of install problems for Windows 7 is easily explained by the fact that the OS is new and that all new users not buying a machine pre-loaded with the OS have to go through the install process."

My windows 7 is a 32 bit ultimate version and my cpu is clocked at 3.2 Ghz according to windows.
It is actually at 3.4(bios settings and cpuz) Also sometimes i had a little problem when installing it kind of a long install..

The rest i like, the best windows for me, better then win XP.

(PS: forgot, now when my PC starts gives and error, no videos signal and it restarts by it's own and it is ok after that giving me the message about windows ...etc., have to reinstall it. Also i am using the RC version so that might have to do with it a bit.)

[citation][nom]homrqt[/nom]Jane, don't resort to arguing with these meatheads over a blog. You're better than that lady.[/citation]

I'm not arguing with them over a blog, I'm arguing over my best friend's reputation. Thanks though!

My problem happens on wake-up from sleep mode. It either fully restarts and gives me the choice of the 3 safe modes or start nomally.........or i get to windows quick....it is really laggy and nearly unresponsive followed by a BSOD that is so fast I cant read it, then it restarts anyways.

Any one else see this?

Marcus most of those install issues you talked about are not the fault of Windows 7 but the fault of the computers it is being installed on. Lets face it if you try to install windows 7 over top of a buggy windows Vista install you are just asking for trouble & I know for a fact that a lot of people do just that if a Windows Vista install has problems or worse spyware & viruses installed & running how the hell would installing Windows 7 over top of something like that not be asking for headaches & problems that is user error not Win 7 error. I work in the computer industry & see it every day pretty much.

4: dvd drive not found never seen this happen but ummm try putting a disk in the drive it probably will reappear win 7 has that feature that hides unused drives on some machines with cheap dvd-rw drives I could see this happening.

8: iphone won't sync oh boo hoo maybe Apple should fix their buggy itunes software & update it for Win 7 if it is not working right that is up to Apple to fix not Microsoft get real.

10: taskbar I am not sure it is pretty easy to tell what is running & what is not just move your mouse over it & it shows you that it is running not to hard to figure out for 99% of the world I guess.

9: custom icons not to much to say to this on but there is a option to make it so windows does not touch the icons when you change your themes just uncheck allow themes to change desktop icons problem solved unless you fall into that 1% bracket from 10: then I guess there is no help.

7: aero snap problems chalk that up to driver issues or a system that just does not have the muscle to run WIndows 7 properly but most likely a graphics driver issue or back to that bad upgradse from a buggy windows vista to a windows 7.

I could go on & talk about the rest of the issues but I have to get back to work & this is not really worth me putting any farther time into this.

Marcus where are you when Apple releases a new OS version & they have problems like deleting user data etc etc can we see you write about that as well & if you did I did not see it & I come to this site every day.

[citation][nom]trevorvdw[/nom]31% of Windows bashing articles are from Marcus Yam.[/citation]

Yeah, 98% rather...

Seriously, Marcus, go back to kissing Apple and let people that actually care about Win 7 to write meaningful articles about it.

lol. Well half of these aren't problems, but people going through the learning curve of 7. Lets see:

Problems with installation: 31 percent - ok, thats a problem, though its not well defined.

Missing applets or components: 26 percent - also a problem, if they are critical applets or components, except I'm positive they are not and are now a part of Windows Live Essentials download.

Aero theme is not running: 14 percent - is it off? Is your GPU good enough? Cause Win 7 will drop into a Basic theme (Aero off) automatically in certain situations when keeping it on will be detrimental to system.

DVD drive not found: 8 percent - this seems to be a very big problem, if the numbers aren't being inflated. Haven't heard of this before or experienced it which is strange considering 8% problem rate.

Hidden extensions: 6 percent - not a problem but a setting.

Too many minidumps: 6 percent - umm, this is a problem how? Seems like a feature to me, and what does 'too many' mean?

Aero snap problems: 3 percent - it IS working as designed, again, learning curve.

iPhone won't sync with Windows 7: 2 percent - yet again, Blame MS for Apples (I am sure willful) poor design of iTunes on Windows. Nice.

Custom icons get changed with new theme: 2 percent - This is a huge deal! lol. Sounds like someone is reaching.

Taskbar problems: 1 percent - again learning curve - hint: the ones that are running have embossed blue block around them, as opposed to the ones that don't.

So out of 10, only 2 real problems and 2 half-problems (I question their classification as a 'problem' but can't say without more details - missing components and Aero not running).

The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed."

Leaving 69% for positive Windows articles? I call effin' bias! It should be 50-50 to be fair!

You morons need to get a clue, I just did a simple Google search to find all the Windows 7 related articles on Tom's, most of which are positive and are written by Yam.

I use Windows 7 and it's great, but you airheads really give PC users a bad name by acting like total morons who just get all up in arms. STFU and do the research and back up your claims before trying to slam people.

Honestly, just STFU. Tom's you need a voting system to cast away moronic readers.

I agree that "hidden extensions" is not a problem. It's a setting. If you couldn't turn them back on, or your system crashed while doing so, then yes, it would be a problem.

Not really, but you could try to disable the automatically restart after crash (it should be in the error reporting window) ; sounds like a driver might not support the wake-up from sleep mode.
It could be hardware-related and you could actually avoid the sleep mode on that particular PC and see what happens. If it works OK without the sleep mode, try hibernation mode instead if you need to have something of that matter.
Also, run a memtest and check for memory faults; you may need a new memory stick or just seating the memory stick better in the slot.
If the dump file gives you a driver error, try updating the drivers; you should be able to find newer ones online, unless it's really a legacy hardware. In that case, just avoid the sleep mode (change the settings in power management) and you should be fine. I never use the sleep thing anyways, I find hibernation much more stable and convenient, ever in case of power failure.

Seriously, we may need to Thank Microsoft for creating these bugs...

1. People get bored, nothing to bash...
2. It helps Our IT friends/relative and me with a job (Including Marcus Yam)
3. Obama may have more 'ahh' on his speech, every other sentence.
etc...

I love W7 but I have been having issues on my machine with a fresh install of OEM W7 Ult. My machine freezes randomly in some applications and sometimes the screen just goes black when playing some games.

Leave Marcus alone already.. so he maybe doesn't like windows, so what??, he was just reporting about other findings, that's all, it's his job, let him do his job. BTW, i'm a MCP, so i do love microsoft products..

[citation][nom]Marcus Yam[/nom]If you aren't able to handle a factual piece of news that might reflect negatively on an operating system, I suggest that you refrain from clicking on such headlines..[/citation]

Factual according to them anyhow :) Not verified. If you aren't able to detect humor in comments maybe you're in the wrong line of work. Then again I'm not sure just posting cliff notes of other site's articles qualifies journalism anyhow. My 2 cents.

[citation][nom]trevorvdw[/nom]31% of Windows bashing articles are from Marcus Yam.[/citation]

How is this Windows bashing? Seems you just have a beef with Yam.

This basically tells us that 31% of the Windows users who think they are savvy enough to install a new OS are not. Most of the install problems I read of dealt with trying to install 64-bit OS onto 32-bit OS. It was actually a pretty easy install once I had the disk in hand.

Some people don't follow the proper procedure on upgrading. I think Micosoft should force a upgrade check to see if any software is going to create problems. I have done several upgrade and the computer value added software is one of the worst ofenders.

[citation][nom]darkknight22[/nom]I have the iPhone issue and it's extremley annoying, although I blame itunes for that one.If you want to talk statistics here, that's 31% of people that have issues....and what % of people with win 7 are ones that even have issues to begin with?[/citation]

Thank you for pointing this out. Yammer wants it too look like 31% of all Windows 7 users.

The problem I'm having I don't really see much of anywhere.

Basically if I temporarily adjust the screen brightness of my laptop (from Mobility Center, keyboard brightness keys, or simply by being on battery) and that lower value becomes the default value.

So if I shut down on battery, plug in the power, and start up, it will still be on the lowered brightness and I have to manually raise it every time. It's really annoying.

It seems in the current state of media (at least in North America), many of you have no idea what an honest reporter looks like.

The fact that many of you feel that Marcus has a predisposition towards disliking Win 7 (yes I am aware he has denied this in the comments here), actually makes him a very good candidate for reporting what amounts to fairly positive news regarding that product.

Truly "Fair and Balanced" (LOL) reporting is always more accurate if there is a reverse bias in place on the part of the reporter. (IE, if you can imagine, a far-right but FAIR and BALANCED conservative reporting on something like, say, the overall positive impact the Cuban medical system has on its people...)

You have been poisoned by the industry, which has become a caricature of itself.
