I had my W520 working well with 2560x1080p @115 Hz. It was a 29 inch display. I left that monitor at my old place, due to moving to a different city. Now I'm looking into buying a 34 inch 3440x1440p display and I wonder if it will work with my old W520 laptop?

Using the Display Port connector on your laptop, yes it should work and you have access to a max resolution of 2560 x 1600(very likely 60Hz) but in 2025 with merely 2GB of VRAM, expect to see your laptop's temps go up and a slight sluggishness to your overall tasks. I'd stick to a 1080p if you intend to stick tot he laptop. If you're going to be on the laptop for a short period of time, I'd get a 1440p monitor.
