Hi guys,
While running 3dmark03, on the first CPU test (wings of fury) my PC went black screen and never recovered. I have had similar issues playing some games, but not all.

Does this point to my CPU being faulty or is it unfortunately not that simple? The first 4 tests ran reasonably well but I can't get a benchmarking score because I can't get the program past the first CPU test (5th test).

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Kind regards
Julian

I dont know if any of that stuff would help. Thanks for the reply.

Kind regards

try the test again and when it fails restart your computer and go to your bios and check the temp of the cpu and the voltages, write down the results and post it here, meanwhile download memtest to check your memory for erros and install it on a floppy disk and run it for 4-5 cycles and see if there is any erros and lets know

wish if there was UnDo in the life

Download "Motherboard Monitor" install and set it to monitor voltages and save as a text file.

Now run the tests again. When it crashes reboot and check the log file. That will tell if your voltage to the cpu etc are stable.

I aint signing nothing!!!

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.
I ran memtest which successfully passed 4 cycles with no errors. I downloaded motherboard monitor and got the following results from the log. The numbers on the top are the last log before it crashed and the results below are 1 sec intervals.

MHz CPU_tmp SYS-temp core0 core1 3.3 +5 +12
---------------------------------------------------------
1473 59 44 1.74 1.23 3.23 4.88 12.65
1473 62 44 1.74 1.23 3.23 4.88 12.65
1473 60 44 1.74 1.23 3.25 4.91 12.65
1473 62 44 1.74 1.23 3.23 4.88 12.59

There was not more variation than listed above for any of the logged time intervals.

I also tried boosting DDR voltage by 0.1 V to 2.6V and Vcore voltage by the lowest possible setting of 5%. Didn't really help so I moved it back to where it was.

If anyone can recommend and further steps I will be happy to try anything to try and find out why this 3dmark03 crash occurs on the CPU test #1 (I havnt been able to run the benchmark past that point)

Thanks again
Julian

I'm guessing its a videocard issue; don't read too much into the fact that Mad Onion calls it a "CPU test", its still very much a GPU test. Did you try another set of drivers for your Radeon ? Updating DirectX might help as well, and you could try to download latest AGP drivers for your motherboard.

62c is kinda hot, i wouldnt rule that out, and a 44c system temp...sounds to me like your case has ventallation problems which would also allow your nb, sb, videocard, cpu to all run too hot, any one of these could be causeing these problems. The solution would be to add one or 2 low rpm fans to your case to just allow better ventallation.

I'm guessing that's a Palomino core, so 62c isn't too bad, but the 44 sys temps means his north bridge is boiling. Active cooling might help (put a fan on your north bridge) and some case fans. A simple test to see if this will help. Take off the side and aim a housefan at the mobo, and just outside the case. If this enables you to complete the benchmark, you have heat problems.

Well done folks I'm starting to get somewhere now. I made a house fan blow on my motherboard, and after the benchmark had ran succesfully, my system temp was down around 32 degrees and my CPU temp around 52.

It got through the benchmark for the first time (results may indicate an upgrade would be good :)) but now I guess I need to find out how to keep my pc cooler, or what bit is getting hot. Any suggestions?

I already have two fans on the main box plus one on my main chip. I take it the northbridge chip is the one under the gold heatsink that says "Gigabyte" on it.

If this is likely to be the one causing my problems I will get a fan for it and try again. I see there is a connector that says "NB_FAN", I assume "Northbridge fan" is what is supposed to be plugged in there?

Any other remedies would be much appreciated.

Thanks again.

lots of little things will help, such as removing the chipset cooler and applying a good thermal compound along with a smallish 40-60mm fan. Also neatly tucking away cables to allow better airflow. You need to try as hard as you can to increase the airflow in your case. What case are you using anyhow?

The north bridge fan is a good start. A new chip hsf would also be good. One of the big zalmans would be overkill. If you can get your hands on one of the stock fans from the xp2500+ you should be fine. Bothe of these options are very quiet as well.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. From your responses I have managed to track down my problem to an overheating issue. A Zalman 6000cu fan blowing over my southbridge and bios chips plus a new cpu cooler and northbridge heatsink\fan solved my issues.

System temp runs around 35 deg as does my CPU with the added bonus of no more crashes. Nice work.

Next issue is my benchmark scores on 3Dmark03 are around 1788. I think that may be pretty average from what I can gather.

That is even after today I upgraded my CPU from an AMD XP 1700+ to an AMD XP 2400+. Before doing this, but after fixing my cooling issues my Benchmark scores where very similar. I'm not sure if this is expected or not.

On motherboard monitor my CPU speed is showing around 2009MHz where before my new chip it was showing around 1500MHz, so I think my new CPU is working. Maybe my motherboard is too old? In bios its clock speed is 133MHz and the DIP switches are set to auto.

Would you expect my score to be better with my system? This may be the wrong forum for this, but while on the subject of my PC I'll ask anyway. Thanks for the help, I'm stoked!! : )

julian.
