You can't accurate pit a necessity over a luxury and expect people to pick the necessity, especially when they don't usually have to think about it because they ensure it due to instinct. It's like asking would you rather breath or use the internet?
Yep, until we know the question posed to the respondents, any report on their answer is meaningless. We can't even be sure that most of the men in the survey understood that food and shelter were on the table. Hell, access to the internet (or, for that matter, regular access to sex) basically presupposes comfortable access to food and shelter.
Hypothetical Poll Question: "What's your favorite mode of transportation?" Headline the next day: "42% of men favor owning a Ferrari over keeping their own legs."
