So i just got the 4790k last week. Got to oc'ing (4.6) and monitoring temps today, and with my h100i the temps sit around 65 for the first 20 or so minutes and then just randomly shoot up to 100. I already reapplied the thermal paste and made sure the cooler was seated right but still happening the same way every time. This is with monitoring with realtemp, coretemp, and msi afterburner. Did i get a bad processor? I could still exchange it with microcenter.

That's wierd, it says failed right away? Make sure to check "Stress FPU" and anything else and press Start.

They try to bin their 4790K, so that should happen as often. I got my 4770K when they were binning, so I got a crappy chip.

ive used 3 different coolers and its been high with all. my thermaltake frio extreme had my 2500k at 4.5 with no problems.

This does seem odd, when you tested the different cpu coolers did you use the correct parts including backplate and make absolutely sure it was the right orientation?

Same with my 4770K. Not sure why it is so hot, delidding is an option, but I am not voiding the warranty.

Yeah but here's the thing, in an earlier post dusktilldawn48 wrote: "so i reset all my bios to default and primed it, it turbos to 4.4 and after about 16 mins it jumps to 90C. " At stock speed/voltage/wattage, the 4790K should NOT be getting anywhere near 90C. If he's experience these kind of temps at stock speed/voltage with both his and his friends chip, to me that says the chip is not the problem. My 4790K with a Noctua NH-U14S cooler (single fan with voltage reduction adaptor to reduce fan speed) at stock speed with prime95 jumpes from about 33C to 54C with all cores 100%, then once prime95 starts pushing the wattage up by itself (a known issue with the current version of prime95) I find that once the wattage has gone from 88W to about 130W my core temps go up to 68C.

This is all still well below what dusktilldawn48 is seeing.

That isn't really a lot. When I run prime I'd spike to ~85-90 degrees within roughly 20 minutes on 4x4.4ghz, as my cpu vcore somehow goes up to 1.56v even though I set it static on 1.135v. Any other test (AIDA64, Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. OCCT or performance tests) on the other side wouldn't get me over 68°C being with a Scythe Mugen 4 (quite cheap one, but still sufficient it seems), average temps on torture tests being 60-62 degrees. Under normal work or gaming I don't even hit 50 degrees average. I'm still struggling a bit on getting my rig stable, though. After I figured temps aren't the problem I got rewarded with nice bsod's (that now after a BIOS update seem to have evened out tho).
