arctic freeze is pretty popular - and as far as I know there is no difference between "cpu thermal paste" and "gpu thermal paste" 😛
 


They initially wanted to charge more. When their performance wasn't enough they dropped the price to $400 to match 8800gts. If they went any lower they would lose so much.
 
Not a big fan (no pun intended) of the heat and power numbers on the HD4870 though.

I was hopign for better, not because some design change warranted it, but because it's going to be tougher to get it into laptops if the HD4850 & 4870 are putting out those kind of power and thermal characteristics.

Hopefully a little maturity will help a bit in a potential mobilzed part, but IMO it would likely be best to reduce a few things along the way making it 8 clusters instead of 10 and thus 32 TMU instead of 40, but maybe leave the RBE count alone.

Anywhoo, interesting early numbers, but still hoping for some additional information ontop of the Epreview info to flesh things out a bit.

I'd love to see something similar in an HDX laptop, even if it was slightly crippled. Make it an HD3200 for the road warrior side, and then switch to the HD4K when running on AC for gaming.
 
We're hoping to have the hybrid setup done by tomorrow.

The O/Cing we feel is limited by the fan speeds being low and running hot. All the benchmarks were with the fans at stock speeds. Hopefully newer drivers will allow for better fan control so we don't have to do the mod.
It is extremely loud with those blue pins out, louder than our 3 gtx280's @100% and w/ 4 45db fans on it :)

Yes the drivers are still not final.

I've been researching on paste and from test arctic cooling mx-2 is better than arctic silver5 plus it's silver free so no chance of shorting something out.

Other than the HD4850, every other card is ridiculously overpriced here.

4850 - $221
4870 - $399
GTX260 - $459
GTX280 - (censored for sanity)

I'd sooner buy 2 4850s than a single 4870 for that crap price. Where is all of that extra $100 going over the US price? Our dollar is almost equal with yours.
 

Well the fan is at what 29%? give the card a break, once the bios fix comes and you can put the fan speed at like >60% then it shouldn't even hit 80C.
 
Well, I just got my antec 900 in today, opening it up tomorrow with my 4850 that was supposed to be in today, but I guess they had some stock problems, so it is coming in tomorrow in which I will post up some benchmark numbers. As well as that fully pictured review I was talking about doing with COD4, UT3, COH, OBLIVION, and CSS. All against my 8800GTS320 for the ppl that bought the 320 when it was the only viable midrange option. Can't I just use rivatuner or ATITOOL to just increase the fan speed to 100% at all times like I have my 8800GTS320 at now?
 


Yeah, IMO, perfect laptop for such a hybrid solution, big enough for a good solid HSF assembly when plugged in and then enough room on the mobo for the HD3200 as your hybrid type graphics for when on battery.
Of course bad news about no CrossfireX between HD3K and HD4K, but really, I'd be fine with the HD3K just turning off when the AC is plugged in and running off just the HD4K, or else use the HD3200 for physics or something.
 
Even though Im excited about this card, Im even more excited to see if 1GB will make a difference. The ATI arc isn't really affected by memory amount much, thats why he 512 3850 performs the same as a 256 one. The interesting thing is that the 4870 was supposed to originally launch with stock memory of 1GB, but due to the DDR5 shortage, they have had to reduce the chips down to half. It'll also be interesting to see how far these chips can OC, seeing as software is limiting that area of interest. One area where Rv770 dissapointed me was in the clock-shader lock. I had thought they had unlocked the two, early rumors suggested Shader speed of >1ghz, but I guess that wont happen.
 
The express review place, said that the gddr5 OCed greatly, reaching 4400mhz easily. We'll have to see, cuz quimoda doesnt have a great reputation for OCing.
 

Not the point bro, turning it up to 70% might take the temp down to 85ºC at full load, but still that's way too hot for me. I'm gonna buy 10 80MM fans for $13 shipped at newegg, and then put some Arctic Silver 5 on there. Hopefully that will help a bit.

I never said the card didn't rock!! I'm going to get one for sure, just a bit disappointed with the temps.
 


Ok I have to see what your set-up is, attach pictures dave! [where] would u put ten 80mm fans, what case is that? etc. etc. etc.

Why buy one when you can buy ten? Look at those bulk prices. 😀

I need a few or some other rigs. I will put 2 intake at the front, 2 exhaust at the back, 1 more on the side, maybe one or 2 in the cd bays to keep the air circulating there.
