4890 or 5770

Hi there!

I am building a new PC. I have a 19 monitor capable of 1440*900.

I want a graphic card that will last at least 2-3 years before I crossfire it.

I'm hoping that ATI launches a new 5*** series or drop the 5850 price, but because that hasn't happened yet I'm forced to choose these 2.

In one hand I have the Gigabyte 4890 OC (aftermarket cooler) and in another I have the 5770.

Wich one to choose?

4890 will perform better, but it will also use more power and produce more heat.

If DX11 is important and/or power/heat is an issue, get the 5770.

otherwise, get the 4890.

Well I would like to have DX11 support, but that is way bottom in my list.

The only question is with DX11 will the 5770 performance boost up?

Normally I would say the 4890, but in this case I'm going with the 5770 simply because of DX11.

Two or Three years down the road you WILL need a DX11 card to play the latest games.

'The only question is with DX11 will the 5770 performance boost up?' - Likely.

Even when Dx 11 games do come out, I'm not sure if the 5770 will be able to handle them well, and for a long time.

I suggest you get the 4890, because all new Dx 11 games will have Dx 10 options too, and the boost in graphics quality from Dx 11 comes at the cost of being more graphics intensive in which case, your 5770 might not shine.

Using the newer features in DX11 will require more from your GPU, so it's entirely possible that when GX11 games become available running them in DX11 will mean lower FPS for a given video setting. The 5700 series is a big dropoff from the 5800 series, so if DX11 is really that important and you want to be able to use it, I would get a 5800 series to be safe.

I was kind of waiting if ATI would launch an card with the performance and price of the 4890. Like a 40 nm 4890 with DX11 support.

I'm going to buy the PC around Christmas. I hope by then if a new card doesn't get realised, at least the price on the 5850 drops.

yeah, hopefully by then 5850 prices will drop. Also, by then if manufacturers are releasing they're own flavors of the 5850, you might be able to pick up a reference 5850 for cheaper

Hard question if you ask me.

However I will choose the 5770 - Here are the reasons:

1. Its cheaper ($40 isn't so little when you considering upgrading after 2-3 years)
That will allow you to crossfire probably sooner like in 1 year and on that res you will be perfect, believe me!

2. It have full DX11 support. Now lot of people dont give it enough credit but DX11 WILL run games faster -which will close the performance gap in the future and thats what you should care about as for now this card will run anything on that res.
If now this card is about 20% slower than 4890 then after some driver optimisations and maturity in 1 year I say the gap will be 10-15%.
Using DX11 for the optimisation parts of it will easily give you that kind of boost (at least 20% expected)

3. Uses LOT less power (will allow you to get 650W power supply and still be good for crossfire)
Also will save you money from the bill so another incentive

4. Its smaller - if you have small case you will fit it easily

5. Less noisy

3. I
