[citation][nom]peacock[/nom]Dude I think you did not comprehend the article properly. What you quoted above there is clearly a statement saying that Tuan doesn't want to see Apple dominate that market segment, and hopes that Microsoft will have something great to offer to counter.[/citation]

That's irrelevant. I just don't think it was necessary to make it seem like Apple holding a niche market which they just explained sucks and serves no purpose is kind of unnecessary. Also, not meant as an insult, just facts; judging by some articles written in the past, Tuan appears to be a fan of Apple products, which is fine.

I'd want a tablet that could display full color videos, comic books, and magazines along with regular old text books/documents and web browsing. All of that in a wide variety of formats with no/little DRM or other restrictions and a readily available source for accessing them.

an onscreen keyboard would be a must, or a system that could could read my hand writing on the fly with good accuracy.

All for cheaper than a netbook, because it can do the same things already but has a fully functioning keyboard + mouse + well designed OS/gui.

I agree with ncr7002. I buy something, I want to use it how I see fit. I also don't like to buy things I can't fix myself. Ipods and Ipads should have replaceable batteries. And the Ipad itself should be open source. Without having to jailbreak it. Apple wants to have it's hand in everything I do after I buy their products.

As i see it, although i completely agree with the fact that tablet till' this day haven't improve in any possible way.
The joy people feels when talking crap about iPad it's absolutely OK, you know why? because people, users and everyone around this tech world, was expecting a real good job from Apple, i was expecting a good quality product with good software support a device that was perhaps the new "iphone" boom but in the tablet sector, finally a tablet pc that was worth buying.

But what happened? All the expectations were driven to dirt, a tablet pc which only God knows why doesn't support facebook crap err* games, that right there was a complete lack of own awareness from Apple, how many people uses facebook, how many people game on facebook, do you know why there is so much people playing facebook games? Because this games are easy, are just 1 click away, you need no hardware, nor nothing.
Despite the effort from apple the tablet it's crap, and is worst than any other tablet because we had too much expectations on it. Thats why.
Finally the price tag it's preposterous.

[citation][nom]hurfburf[/nom]I think the criticism of the iPad stemmed from the fact that it's even lamer than a tablet PC, and everyone was expecting something that would be at least as good.[/citation]
No SD slot. Less cpu than a Slate. Lame.

They should at least add a few usb ports so that users could use a standard mouse and keyboard when they wished but still be able to be on the go and use a stylus then. If done right they would make great general use possible better yet multitasking as well the means to be able to hook up to a secondary monitor would be great at the office.

[citation][nom]rodeo_clown[/nom]I still think iPad will be a success and that the future for everyday tasks is touchscreen. You won't buy a tablet to replace a PC. You buy a tablet instead of buying a 2nd PC because most of the time you do things that don't require a powerful graphic card and complicated OS. I find the iPad perfect to replace my wife's laptop because she doesn't do games. At least not 3D ones. I will keep my gaming desktop... and this is how everyone's happy, including me when I'll come from work, want to pick my email or browse the net and I'll just fetch the iPad.[/citation]
I agree, the MS fanboys are slamming your post because you had something nice to say about Apple. Just ignore their ignorance.

PS While I like Apple I won't buy a iPad because of the non replaceable battery but may buy one from another maker with Android on it.
Linux = Freedom from the Man, be it Microsuck or Crapple

The tablet makers who push a full OS, be it Linux or Windows may well do what HTC have done with their Windows Mobile phones. TouchFlo provides an interface that gives it all the usability of standard phones with big icons easy operation with thumb & finger, but you can easily go straight to the full Windows Mobile as well.
Secondly, no one has really used Windows 7 on a full sized tablet yet, XP was a totally differant animal so reserve judgement until you have tried it and like it/hate it.

Tablets do suck, tablet notebooks(w/a fkin keyboard) are a different story. Ive been looking all around for a decent tablet notebook for about a year, but none of them have a graphics card. It's so stupid, on top of that the prices for them are ridiculous. 1000+ for an integrated intel gma4500 haha ya right. Supposedly there were tablet netbooks coming out with the tegra chipset. ~$200-400 1080p capable.

Why would you put the pen down and use a virtual keyboard? I just go on writing with the Tablet Input Panel's excellent handwriting recognition. And for taking notes in class I just use OneNote.

Why does Microsoft "need" to do anything? I do fine without any of Microsoft's products. Maybe Linux developers could build a sensible OS and applications for a Tablet PC. Or BSD devs. Or anyone other than Microsoft. The world would be a much better place without Microsoft. Unless you are Bill Gates or Steve Ballmer, et al.

What up with this "Microsoft has to do this?" Ubuntu Netbook Remix, particularly the upcoming 10.04 release, is perfect for tablet devices. Large icons, you can even drag and 'throw' the menu in the new one. It's time we stop waiting for Microsoft to play catch-up, especially seeing how Windows won't run on the low-power but high-productivity ARM processors, but Linux-based OSes already will.

I agree with what you say except picking microsoft to lead the charge over apple is a bit silly when both are already a monopoly in either operating systems or i-somethings. Isn't this a chance for anroid or chrome or some other linux based system to come out of the shadows and be the market leader. Get busy linux guys.

Well, you totally missed this. Actually, I will buy not one, not two, but probably three or maybe even more. The iPad is exactly what I've been needing for 20 years. Great device specs and I'm sure Apple will live up to the hype. I'm also sure that the OS issue will be resolved in time. MacOSX will be on the iPad and Apps will run on the MacOSX (e.g., my laptop). The Apps are there and I can, and will, write my own for our needs. SDK is great. Life just gets better.

[citation][nom]Charbax[/nom]Soon enough Laptops, e-readers and Tablets will be combined into one. Using a simple swivel screen mechanism, you can turn the screen to cover the keyboard, and using Pixel Qi, the screen will be as readable as e-ink.[/citation]
That is like saying motorcycles, cars, and trucks will be combined into one.

You are totally right "Tablets Suck" always have always will. They are a joke and why anybody would use one is beyond me!!!! A will take a cheap 5 year old laptop any day over a tablet. There is no functionality with the device. No CD Rom, no apps, it is a joke!!!!!! Yea I am ripping it it's a device for fan boys......period!!!!!

Well, speaking for myself I've had a tablet for about five years now (first a Toshiba and then an IBM/Lenovo). I like them very much.

However, the existence of a fold-out keyboard is a big part of that - and the fact that I can do anything with them that I can do on a standard PC is a significant point too.

The whole 'poking at screens with your finger' thing has just made me not want to use them as much - capacitative touchscreens don't suit people with long fingernails, for one thing. I've never seen the point of multitouch. As regards looong battery life (ie. 2 0's longer than long), I managed that by buying a high-capacity battery for my Lenovo. And I have a dedicated e-reader running OpenInkpot for reading reflowable content (novels, etc) and PDFs of course material.

There is no space in that market for an iPad, as far as I am concerned - whatever people say, it really doesn't do anything new and innovative, it doesn't solve any problems better than the alternatives (or in most cases, even as well), and it does add a new set of problems, ie. how to get all my open content onto a closed platform. You can advertise it until the cows come home but I made the huge mistake of buying an iPod touch and would never buy another closed-bloody-market-Apple-product-from-Hell, because (and I agree that different people will have radically different viewpoints on this) to me, it's a complete waste of time and money. Now maybe there is a point for organisations that are willing to pay for a closed-source tablet-based solution to a specific problem, and if there is, so much the better for them.

I do hope Microsoft do get off their arses and work on the details, like battery life - I have enjoyed using MS software on tablet PCs, particularly the lenovo.

At least part of the challenge is this mentality "I want it to do everything a full laptop does, but I want it smaller, faster, and at 1/3 the price." If you tell someone you can get a great Windows 7 convertible tablet with touch screen and pressure sensitive stylus, big hard drive, plenty of RAM but then you tell them it will be $1400 (on par with other high-end but larger screen laptops) they balk "Nah! Maybe if it were $300!" Then if you pair it down to get close to their price point it doesn't have the features they want "Where do I put my CD in, why can't I hook up X peripheral, I miss my full size keyboard." Chalk it up to fickleness more than anything else. People are just waiting for some wow factor they can mentally latch onto that will get them over their hump.

I am no business mogul but i will bet my son's tuition that if a company with good rep like ummmmm......Asus! come up with it's eepad or eetablet embed android 3.0 add wifi,bt,3g,4g,lte cdma or gsm+car mountable+a-gps= google maps navigation (btw works wonderfully on my DROID!),1.4ghz cortex cpu+powerful gpu= smooth, zero lag multitouch, ummm 32gig internal storage, screw wifi how bout wimax? nah wifi n, 1gb ram, and most importantly....atleast 80% compatible with existing market apps, a super amoled screen, 12mp camera with flash, fm hdradio....Nuff said. Well, all that for $399? will that tablet sell like hot cakes? or should we stick with our cupcakes? pun intended 😛

xantek24: if Asus came up with an eeetablet with android 3.0, wifi, bt, 3g, etc, gps, sdhc, blah... I would very probably buy it.
