if i am going to spend $280 on a 560ti twin frozr II Golden Edition, is that a good deal?

or should i be looking to buy a 6950 2bg?

Yeah, if you are looking to flash an HD6950 I would stick to the reference model.
As for the GTX 560 Ti I wouldn't say that is a particularly good deal. The MSI Hawk model is cheaper, clocked 50mhz higher and uses the updated Twin Frozr III cooler. The Gold Edition does look sweet though I guess.

how do i know which models are reference and non reference?
and i also heard that manufacturers arent making "flashable" cards anymore...could this be why neweggs top sellers have been out of stock for a while?

The reference model is the one with the box like cooler and the fan at the end of the card. Like so:

They only vary in regards to what decal the individual manufacturer has chosen to place on the card.

Well... how would buying a more expensive model make it a better deal?
