5770 Outperforming my 7850?

Hi guys.


Recently I purchased an MSI 7850 2GB to replace my current 5770 1GB in this system:

MOBO: Biostar GF8100 M2+ SE
PSU: Corsair VX550w
CPU: AMD 630 x4 @2.8GHz per core
1680x1050 monitor



Now before I ordered the card I was aware that there would be a bottleneck due to my other components. But I was reassured that the card would still outperform the 5770 in almost all cases. This is not my experience, in every game I have tested they are either neck and neck or the 5770 pulls ahead. I'm wondering if this is the expected result of the card in my system or is there something else at play? Could this problem be fixed without having to replace my MOBO/CPU which of course if the most obvious solution.

In the worst case scenario the HD 7850 should perform just as well as the HD 5770 assuming you really have a severe bottleneck.

Have you tried updating the driver? Hopefully that will fix your issue.

You should be seeing a significant improvement over the 5770. What are you using for system ram? If you can provide average framerates with both cards installed it might be helpful, assuming that you are gaming. Also i would make sure that you are using the same video settings when you compare these 2 cards. Most games will default the video settings for the 7850 higher than the 5570, which would give a better image but a similar framerate. What are you using this computer for?

update your drivers after a complete sweep in safe mode using driver sweeper.

how much ram do you have?

I use this computer for gaming. As for the drivers I am using 12.11 at the moment. My RAM is I believe Corsair 2x2GB DDR2

i believe your biggest bottleneck is your ddr2 ram...time to upgrade your system (sans the GPU)

Your CPU doesn't look like a bottleneck but your 4gb DDR 2 ram does.

Would it be worth upgrading to 8GB of DDR2 RAM or should I go DDR3 and therefore have to buy a new motherboard?

CPU bottleneck. Ram is pretty much never a bottleneck, 800mhz ddr2 doesnt perform much different than 1066mhz ddr3 in games, you might get 1-2% more fps. Its a CPU bottleneck, especially at 1680x1050. I would expect you probably turned up game settings because you got a better gpu, well turning up game detail settings also puts more strain on the cpu. Crank up something like AA instead which puts more load on the gpu, crank it up to 8x and you will probably find your fps remains the same due to cpu bottleneck.
