60C without overclocking

I am running my Athlon 1ghz (Not yet overclocked) with a Cooler Master DP5-6H51. The Asus probe is showing a steady temp of 60C even without overclocking. From what I read, this is too hot. I have a chassis fan and a power supply fan. Should I change my HCF to another brand to lower the temperature? Need advise.

i'm still on ymy old P2, so i don't have firsthand experience, but from what i hear and have read, asus probe tends to report around ten degrees hotter than a physical probe. so while warm, it's not insanely hot. also, does your case have adequate ventilation? no matter how much air the fan moves and how wide the heatsink is, if there isn't enough exchange with the outside air you'll hit a temperature ceiling pretty quick and start to heat up.

hey... journeyman. don't know whn that happened. it's been a slow trip. i was fairly early on this new board; i guess i just save my posts for when i have something to say. present post excluded, of course.

persona, I agree with Setzo (from what I've read about the ASUS probe no personal experiance with it). You might try MBM 5.05 from:http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ as an alternative way to monitor your temperature. It seems to correspond well to my bios readings, which is what most people trust. To compare your probe temp to the bios, get it warmed up, and then restart it and quickly check the temp reported in the bios. Hopefully it will be about 10C cooler. That seems to be about the upper acceptable limit. I've been advised to shoot for 40 - 45C, but it depends somewhat on your processor and whether you're trying to overclock, I think.

I feel case ventilation temperature is undervalued. Try running the system with the case open. If that helps more than a few degrees, you could use some more cool airflow in your case. I'd try to draw from the bottom front and vent out as close to the processor as you can. You need to make sure that the hsf intake is not in a "dead" spot in the case as far as airflow goes.

Good Luck

the more I learn, the less I'm sure I know... 😱

I usually go with 1C on the case temperature differential. Before I hooked up my wind tunnel, I could drop the temperature of my case 3C, and my processor 2C with a housefan. A 2C case differential usually converts to a 1C difference on the cpu with a halfway decent fan/heatsink. Case cooling is more of an art than science.

Thanks guys, I downloaded MBM and it is showing around 10C cooler than the Asusprobe. Well, it's still hot at around 50C. Time to get a new HCF and some thermal paste.
