6600GT on a 240W PSU?

well this is my first post =]
so today i went to my friends house and he had an 240W psu
and he had no video card at all, so we decided to go for a 6600GT or lower in class becuase the computer aint so pro.
now all i want to ask everyone is if a 240W PSU can handle a 6600GT or lower class card, any suggestions?

-Here are som of the specs of his computer:
Pentium 4 2.8GHz
2x256MB RAM DDR2
1 DVD-RW Burner
*No PCI cards what so ever*

and could anyone tell me how to check what the motherboard is besides opening the case and lookin at the motherboard.

I'm running a 6800GS on a 240W power supply in a Shuttle along with an Athlon 64 3000+. I was running a 6600GT in there previously. So as long as you have a 240W supply that actually continuously supplies 240W, then you should be fine.
You may be able to go into the BIOS and get some information on your motherboard. Or you may be able to get some info from the post screen. Also, if you look at the Device Manager, you may be able to get some information about what North Bridge or South Bridge your motherboard has.

1) 240W PSU is realy working hard to supply that G/C and the volts to it would be dropping as the load varies - could reduce performance or crash the GC/PC. Remember that if the PSU fails ie. shorts or burns out it could destroy your PC through "voltage spike".

2) There's heaps of free software available eg. AIDA32, lists just about every detail of you PC.

You might want to conform he even has an AGP slot, as many computers were sold to the public by Dell without one, a true robbery! 🙂

That being said, I'd recommend at least a decent 350 watt PSU, and look for an X850XT variant....

well yer it does hav an agp slot with 2 pci slots and i was thinking that he could at least get a 6200/7300 or at the most a 6600/LE/GT as well as a Sound Blaster Audigy soundcard, any comments?
