Hey, I"m having trouble to decide bewteen

Evga's 7600GT clocked 580/1500 for 175$
and
Sepphire's x1800GTO defult for 190$

I've seen some reviews, and both cards perform equal in most games
where 7600gt performs better in Doom3/Quake4 better
and x1800gto performs better in Farcry.

My question is, which one would be better for playing Oblivion, and does Oblivion will detect Ultra High settings for these cards.
( Oblivion did detected my 7800gs with Ultra High settins 😛 )

X1800GTO will be better for Oblivion, since ATI cards run Oblivion better. You won't be able to play the game at max settings, but will run fine with a good resolution, and med settings.

What are your system specs? Both 7600GT and X1800GTO are PCI-E, you have an AGP card.

the 7800GS refers to my old system which was
AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+ (754)
ASUS K8n NForce 3
and 1GB of DD400.

And I played oblivion on UltraHigh settings on 1028x768.

Now I built a new system
2GB of Corsair XMS CAS 2
and AMD 3800+ and the rest is not that important i guess.

Anyhow, I expect on playing Oblivion at least the same level of details as with my 7800gs.

Was my 7800gs better than any of these???

Your 7800 GS is about the same speed as these cards.

Both are good cards, the X1800 GTO is much better if you plan to overclock, though, because the stock clockspeeds are so low, and it has a 256-bit memory interface.

7800GS is better at stock settings. You can unlock pipeliens on the X1800GTO, and it's a good overclocker, so you can have a hidden X1800XT in that X1800GTO.

However, I would get a 3200+ instead (unless you already have the parts) and get a X1800Xt instead.

I don't think X1800GTO or 7600GT will run Oblivion on UltraHigh, but it could.

the 3800+ cost me 99 $ as a part of a combo deal :)
I dont count on unlocking pipes or Overclocking its not always working... The 7600gt comes overclocked...

And seriously, my 7800GS was detected by oblivion on UltraHigh settings and it played real good.

Would you say......90% of the performance????

 J/k, I couldn't resist.

Heheh.

Hell, no! I'd say they're right on par!

The 7600 GT is right on par with the X850 XT, and the X850 XT is right on par with the 7800 GS****.

But if you want to talk about the X800XL or 6800 GT... yeah, those are about 90% of the performance of a 7800 GS, X850 XT, and 7600 GT!****.

****ALL COMPARISONS MADE AT STOCK CLOCKSPEEDS

You're talking about a very small aspect of available settings.

Oblivion will likely detect UltraHigh as the tecture setting (heck it detected my MRX700 as High, but your sliders were likely at whatever Oblivion felt was good, so your view distance might have been down, water reflections to normal, etc.

It all depends on what's in your area but Paul's right the XT is currently a sweet deal, and especially for Oblivion it would be a great choice.

Yup, that retail Sapphire is the one I was refering to, That's the one I have. Zero complaints about the noise (evga 7800GT is clearly more annoying), but I didn't realize the Sapphire fan noise was quiter than the BBA's.

Mailing rebate is not an option for me...

Anyhow The bottom line is to go with x1800GTO ?
For $15 more than the 7600GT and with Oblivion in mind, yes I would buy the X1800GTO for sure.

The open box X1800XT for $199 is also an option but you'd have to game on the card right away to make sure it's working properly as you only get a 15 day warranty. If it's bad you'll have to pay return shipping fees but will get a full refund of the purchase price. But it will cost you $5-10 shipping and a 1-2 week delay. Considering I am currently RMA'ing an Open Box $62 Sapphire Radeon 9800 pro that was clearly a bad card, I can't recommend the $200 open box route unless you understand the risk. I bought loads of them in the past but recently 2 of my last 3 open box have needed to be returned. That about ends my Newegg open box buying. But, For $10 more, it is a superior gaming card if it works.

Oem X1800XT for $200 no rebates would get my vote for sure Grape. Actually in my book it would be the best buy in gaming cards period.

The Sapphires Retail box is so small nowadays, it ain't worth the extra $20+. No way no how could I put my X1600 pro or X1800XT back in their Sapphire boxes.

Yeah, and they don't have the cool graphics like the BBA boxes, so who needs retail.

That's an awesome deal for NewEggers IMO.

As for the noise level, yeah almost every review I've seen of the Sapphire has mentioned that their cooler is quieter than the stock ATi due to slight tweaks in the bios; @ 100% it's still just as loud, but it doesn't spool up as much, and doesn't jump around as erratically.

x1800gto all the way, its got 256-bit memory, 7600gt only has 128-bit (bottlenck, no air, CRAP) and well yeah, that settles it, and the 7600gt was made to compete with the x850xt, so either go for x850xt or x1800gto
