I'm wondering if I can upgrade 2 of my computers with the purchase of 1 card.

my main computer has 1 6870 running in it right now and my secondary system has a 7770 running inside. if I take the 7770 out of my secondary, buy a second one, and put them both in my main computer - then take the 6870 out of the main and throw it in the secondary will both system see a improvement in gaming performance?

Why not just buy a 6870 and have a 6870 crossfire rig, as well as the 7770 rig?

Peaking your performance on one PC should be your goal. You can only use one PC at a time, anyway (for all intents and purposes). Why not just make sure the one you play most has the best? That would be another 6870. Keep the 7770 rig as is, which is what you have now, anyway.

The micro-stuttering on low to mid range cards in crossfire is horrendous. If you cannot achieve your refresh rate in crossfire, that is exactly what you will get.

The 6870 crossfire would be far better. That's what you should be shooting for.

Benchmarks will say yes, but that is not the only consideration.
Read this article on microstuttering. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-stutter-crossfire,2995.html

I think the best approach is to use a single great card so long as a single card can do the job.
