7800GTX and 7900GT

Okay, I've got a new system here with a Asus A8N-e, 7900GT 256mb, 2GB CorsairXMS, AMD 64 x2 3800+, and I got like 4800 on 3dMark06, which seemed to run pretty choppily in some parts, is that a decent score? I've nothing to compare it so since you have to pay to compare results :roll:

Second of all, I got the XFX Extreme Version which is clocked higher ($315) PV-T71G-UDE7 @ supposedly 520/1500 over the non OC one which is 470/1370, is there a way I can verify this? Where can I find the clock speeds on this card that is sitting in my motherboard...

Thirdly, is there any point in getting a 7800GTX anymore? Stock for stock, the 7900 GT has the same amount of pipelines, is clocked higher, overclocks better, and is like a hundred bucks cheaper... is this because the 7800GTX is a better performer or is Nvidia somehow phasing it out by discouraging buyers with its higher price and similar performance.

Any help in trying to figure this out would be much appreciated.

Download rivatuner it should show you all the frequencies and optionally allow you to change them.

The 7900GT is much better than the 7800GT and is priced at $299 so it's a no brainer.

There is no comparison.

3DMARK06 runs choppy on everything, I wouldnt worry about it. 4800 on 06 is a fairly respectable score, my X1800XT scores about 5000 ish at the moment (still working on the drivers) and I have a faster single core chip.

From the early reviews I have seen the 7900GT performs around the same as, if not better than, the 256mb 7800GTX, and as you say price wise is slaughters the 7800GTX. The only competitor for the 7900GT at the moment is the X1800XT as these have been reduced in price to clear and (in the UK) are at a very similar price point.

I was referring to the 7900GT vs the 7800GT.

The 7900GT is priced the same and is a better card.

But just as prozac26 said there is no point in considering the 7800 series any more because the 7900 series (GT and GTX) are so much better and are priced the same or about the same.

They also consume less power and produce less heat which is a plus at today's energy prices.

If you want a GTX get a 7900GTX.


PS 3Dmark is a synthetic benchmark and is largely artificial so do not take it too seriously. Both ATI and nVidia "optimize" their cards for 3Dmark. SPECViewperf is a better benchmark.
