i bought the 7800x3d for gaming and semi heavy vm use and i havent been super happy with it as far as vm stuff goes. I use vmware workstation pro and it just seems to lack the performance that i need. does the 7950x3d perform better in games if I swapped it out for that? if it does I would consider buying it rn if I can get better vm performance and game performance.

How many VM's are you running and what are the resources allocated to each VM? Also, what are the full specs of your machine?

Swapping out the Intel Core i9-7800X3D for the i9-7950X3D may provide better performance for both gaming and heavy virtual machine (VM) usage. The i9-7950X3D offers more cores and threads (likely 18 cores and 36 threads compared to the 7800X3D's 10 cores and 20 threads), which can significantly enhance multitasking capabilities, including running multiple VMs concurrently in VMware Workstation Pro. This should translate to improved VM performance due to the increased core count and overall processing power. In gaming, the benefits might be less pronounced unless the games are optimized for high core counts, but the additional cores and threads can still contribute to smoother gameplay in multitasking scenarios. It's advisable to check benchmarks and performance tests specific to your use cases to gauge the expected improvements before making the purchase. How is your experience? I am also thinking about buying 7800x3d. Should I buy it or not?

Edit: I am still waiting.

The X3d models are optimized for running a largely single threaded app, namely games.
I think if you are running other vm tasks, you would be better off with a R9-7950x.
Probably costs a tad less too.

I struggle to see a niche for the 7900x3d and 7950x3d CPUs...the 7800x3d is better for gaming and the 7900x and 7950x are better for productivity.

Maybe for someone that wants both gaming and productivity and is willing to accept that the 7900x3d and 7950x3d are compromises for both uses...???
