am new to the community, so first a thanks to this site and its members who have answered all my questions with a quick search till this one, a lot of factors are in play and I couldnt find something concrete, so here goes, an upgrade question of course;

My rig, the relevant bits; i7 3770, 3.4/3.9 when overdrive accessible.
Gigabyte ud3h, w 2 pci 3.0 @ x8 for crossfire
1 1gb gigabyte 7850 oc to 975, 1 2gb 7850 oc to 1000
gets 8150 or so on Firestrike in this config.

I know this arrangement costs me access to 1gb vram, but it performs well, and I got about 120 points more on the firestrike bench with the catalyst omega drivers, I figure it performs about as well as a 2gb 7970. Because this is a dead end system, i would like to squeeze as much life out of it as I can before I start again, hopefully about 4 more years of running games at high settings.

For $80 I can get another 7850 and access the full 4gb vram, for $120 I can get a 7870 2gb and have it be the lead card,(in both cases the 1gb card goes, wont fit and x4x4x4 seems iffy) or buy a new r9 280x 3gb, for about $290 after deducting proceeds from selling my current cards with the advantage of the r9 likely being suitable for my next build as a starter.

The x factor is the omega driver set, with previous drivers there is good info showing the first two options as not worth the effort, about a 300 to 400pt increase in firestrike, with stuttering problems. Unfortunately, while the 7850/70 cards are supported, there is little info on them in crossfire using the omega drivers, tail end tech. I am a cook, and a parent, not poor, but I buy bulk and cut coupons, so my rig is put together for maximum performance for cost, at least my next one will be, this one taught a few harsh lessons in keeping track of where what i am buying is in its support cycle. Live and learn, and when in doubt, check toms. Any info and advice relevant to the performance of 7850x2 or 7850/7870 all@2gb in crossfire using the omega drivers would be appreciated.

Thanks, and have a better one.

I would upgrade to a 280x instead of crossfiring. The 280x is roughly 2x the performance of 2 7850's anyway, so it's quite close.

Also if you buy another 7850 you won't have 4gb's of Vram, you'll have whatever the minimum is of either card which in your case would be 1gb's or 2gb's.
2gb's just isn't enough Vram anymore for current generation games. So buying a r9 280x is a much better upgrade than Crossfiring. Also less heat, power, Crossfire problems.

If you can look at the r9 290's, they're down in price right now and I recently just did the upgrade from a 7850 to an r9 290 😉 The performance is a little over double.

-good luck
