7900gt & x1800xt Overclock

I've seen on here in a few posts to get the 7900gt if you overclock and the x1800xt if you don't.

Why is this recomendation being given? IIRC the reviews I read say the x1800xt overclocks very well, reaching around 675 core. I also understand the 7900gt OCs well, but I don't remember how high. So, why the recomendation to get the 7900gt if you overclock?

I'm thinking of getting one of these two cards (unless I can convince the wife (and myself) that it's not insane to spend $440 on an x1900xt, especially with dx 10 comming out in a year). I am leaning towards the x1800xt because, first, it is easier to get, and second, many seem to prefer the ati features and IQ. My 6600gt is overclocked now, with very good results, so I do anticipate that I would at some point OC the new card.

Its not that we are saying the 7900 GT is a better overclocker, which it is. (I have mine clocked at 560mhz-from 450mhz, and 1600mhz-from 1320mhz for the memory) Temps are 39c idle and 51c load with a vf700. Now tell me if the 1800xt can be overclocked 280 MHZ on the memory and 110mhz on the core? Some 7900's oc 130mhz on the core....Thats what I thought.. Well the reason we say get a 7900 if you will overclock is because the 1800XT is better than a stock 7900 GT hands down, and to catch up, or beat the 1800xt you'll need to overclock or buy a factory oc'ed 7900 GT. Thats why we say that, its because the 1800xt is better than stock 7900gt's and to catch up you'll have to oc. Remember this is give and take, even with oc's the two cards are neck and neck. Personally if I was you get a 1800XT 512mb, the memory is good as it'll reduce stutters and frame drops that occur when textures and shaders are being loaded into the gpu memory. I plan on getting a 1900XT though, those are the best 😀

The X1900XT outperforms the 7900GT at stock, and all 7900 XT's will clock up to 690/1600 with ATI's driver and stock cooling. That is what I keep my X1800XT clocked at. I used systool and mine ran artifact free at 725/1670

You got that right. Newegg still only has one of their 11 - 7900GT's in stock and it's a low clocked one for $325 shipped. In contrast, they have plenty of X1800XT 256MB's in stock starting at $290 shipped.

The 7900 GT scales better, plain and simple.

It does more work per clock.

That doesn't mean the X1800 doesn't overclock well, or with bad results; but the 7900 GT get's better results with less overclocking... at least from what I have seen.
