Leadtek A6600GT TDH AGP 128MB card.
AMD2600+
512MB
Clean install with just W2K and FS9 no firewall no virusscanner etc...
FS9 all settings at "high"
Active Sky 2004.5 is active
FSNav is active

Getting framerates here that kind of disappoint me, between 8 and 18 fps.
Should I be satisfied with this outcome?

Wim,

With that CPU and amount of memory (1Gb would be better) plus Active Sky
running then with all sliders at or near max your fps is probably about
right I would say. Presumably the 8 fps level occurs at busy airports? What
AI traffic are you using? Try it without Active Sky and see what
improvement you get. I don't have it but have seen reports that it can drop
frame rates. :0))

I don't know about that...

I have my settings in FS9 about where yours are, and running Active Sky
and FS Nav I'm almost always at about 25. The main exceptions are flying
into Seattle or LAX, both of which are frame rate killers.

This is with an AMD 2800 and a Radeon 9600XT. I think the biggest
difference is in RAM, as I have 1536 as opposed to your 512. I suppose
it coupld account for the frame rate difference, but I wouldn't expect
it to be that drastic.

RAM is cheap 😉 Pick up another 512 and I bet you would see an improvement.

With cleared weather and a default aircraft you should never see 8 fps and
I'd expect more like 20 fps with your processor. With a frame rate hungry
aircraft and a complex ActiveSky weatherscape, even more powerful machines
can dip to 8 fps.

The advice given already is good, more ram might help. I would add to that
I'd bet that ActiveSky is the 8 fps culprit. If it is, you should download
and test frame rate friendly clouds.

Thanks Iain, Scott, Dallas (and all the rest to come🙂)

I tested the fps when there was heavy rain, at dawn, about 80% clouded sky.
Aircraft PMDG 737. Changing display settings like MIP/MAP/AA/filtering
etc... didn't make any difference for the fps (although it did for the
graphical quality!!!)
I will test what difference it makes turning off AS and change planes.
Memory shouldn't be a problem I suppose, because the system uses approx.
475-500MB when in full action. So it should fit into a 512MB bank. Or
perhaps a nearly filled memory leads to decreasing performance....

Thanks so far.

Aahhrr, that darn fancy "doubleclick" button...;-)

Still testing the fps problem. Was flying in a multiplayer environment
tonight. When showing the spot-view and looking at my plane from its 9
oclock I had 30 fps. But looking from another angle where I was able to see
the red tag from another player ahead of me, the fps dropped to 8!!!! No
other things involved like cities or clouds, cause there weren't any. Just
me and him.
So the fps very very much depend on multiplayer environment. Wonder if
anything can be done about that....

I just got the XFX Geforce 6600 GT a few weeks ago and Im not running
Active sky but I can get just about any frame rate I have tried for
with all the settings on High or very high.
AMD Athlon XP2800 1GB pc3200 FS9 running on a seperate HD

its a budget video card, with the same performance of a 9800pro so id be
happy with that.

Active sky is a big performance hit isnt it?

512mb ram might be holding you back, as FS9 + addons uses 400+ mb for me, +
windows that leaves only 100mb free.

The multiplayer problem can be fixed by always joining a session using a
default plane and then changing to the one you want to fly. What happens
is,that if you join with say, the PMDG 737 or similiar and someone else is
flying a plane you don't have, then you will see that pilot in a PMDG also
..Your computer then has to draw a PMDG for every player that is flying a
plane you don't have. If you start out in a default plane, you will then see
"unknowns" as a default plane and fps will be ok

I once joined a server that was for flying the Super Pumas (very complex
helos) but it was pretty hopeless once there were more than 3 of us.
Everyone thing was fine until I looked at another helo and then fps crashed
to about 5. It was the same for everyone connected........
