8800gt hitting 106C under load.

I have an EVGA 8800gt SC 512. I recently checked the hardware monitor and noticed the temperature I was hitting.
Idle: 70C
Load: 90-106C
Fan is at 80% via Rivatuner.
I updated my drivers last night with no noticeable change. The power connections are all good.
The rest of my system is as follows
Q6600 @ 2.4ghz
Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L
2GB Crucial DDR2 667
My CPU cores never go over 54C. I dont understand why my GPU is getting so hot just playing Half Life 2.
I read that the thermal threshold of the G92 is 105C so is it even possible that Im hitting 106 or is it more likely that the temperature sensor is off.

Yah, blow that sucker out. If that doesnt drop the temps then remove cooler and apply arctic cremique or AS5.

Are you getting artifacts in game at that temp?
 
Check whether there is some airflow under the card.
Sometimes the card divides some small cases in two parts with no airflow in the bottom part.

Install some intake fan on the side panel of the case.That may help.
 
I get no artifacts ever. I had already cleaned off the paste and applied AS5 a few months ago. When I first did it My idle was mid 50s and load was high 70s in the same case I am using now.
If I cant fix this I have considered getting a new card with a rear exhaust or getting a motherboard with an onboard sollution. I know my G31 chipset would not work but I have had friends tell me the 9400 works well enough for 1080p and gaming on medium settings.

this my personal opinion... run it till it blows (starts giving artifacts) ... then get a new card... i remember my 7950gt ran at 115C for a year until i had to put it down

u've already done everything to the card to help it cool... eather way, nothing is going to stop it from dying or the sensor is faulty
 
The G92 has a 115C threshold so it's normal. One thing you can do is put PCI slot cooler above the video card not below it and make sure the fan is facing to the video card otherwise you got it backwards. Also you can try reducing the pixel shader memory and GPU core clocks if all that fails. An after market cooler for just a 8800GT not a very wise investment.
 

My 8800GT's have a 100c threshold according to their BIOS's, so that's not normal any more is it?
 
Normal or not, 106c? That is boiling, that doesn't sound healthy in the slightest.

You may want to reapply the TIM again... something doesn't sound right if it WAS doing high 70's and now it's not.

I would agree though that if you can't solve the issue, run it till it's dead before buying another. Try and hold out for the new 300 and 5000 series, that way things get a bit cheaper in the current stuff.
 
Actually (sorry to double post) but, have you checked the other fans in the case, maybe the case itself isn't circulating like it used too.
 
use rivatuner to up your fan speed on the card mine idles at around 40degrees and goes up to 56 underload at 60% fan speed
 
I can't believe it runs past 100C without giving off artifacts. I've owned videocards based on the G92 GPU and none of them would go past 90 C without either artifacts or "skipping" or frozen frames.
