Hey guys i have a 8800 GT 512 mb alpha dog edition from xfx nvidea card... i actually used to play cod 4 with the driver 169.21..... I had already finished cod4 modern warfare once with nvidea driver 169.21.. i recently played call of duty 4 modern warfare with the new nvidea driver 178.24 , but just within 15 minutes my comp restarted ... I kept on trying more than 10 times but when ever there is a huge explosion or any massive graphical requirement my pc just restarts while playing the game....But when i reinstalled the nvidea driver with 169.21 the game seems to be working just fine .. i played more than 3 hours on a stretch without any restart issues...I even installed the latest nvidea driver180.48, 181.20, 182.06 from nvidea website and still am having the same problem that i had with the driver 178.24 the pc just restarts.. But i have no problem playing crysis or assains creed for any long duration with the latest nvidea drivers 178.24 or 180.48... so please help me if any one has able to solve the problem or encountered such an issue cause every time i have to reinstall the old driver 169.21 to play cod 4...

i also have the latest patch 1.7 for cod 4 and do not encounter any problem with any other game...
The temp runs around 63-69 when i run cod 4...

My System spec
AMD ATHLON X2 dual core 5000+
2 gb Ram
windows 32 bit xp professional...

I have to ask this.Did you uninstall the previous drivers? And if so,did you disable your antivirus before installing the new drivers?

Hi!
I have the same problem with any Geforce driver above 178.13... this is the last working driver for my MSI Geforce 8800 GTS 512MB OC Card. With any other driver above (also with 182.06), company of heroes or call of duty 5 are crashing randomly with a complete pc restart when there is action on the screen.. my temps of the graphic card and quad core cpu are completely normal, i already tried increasing my fan to reduce them further , same problem with 10 degrees less! With the 178.13 Driver i can play for hours without any problems... perhaps its the problem of the step to 178.24 where first time the 9900 GT/GTS cards were supported... we should tell nvidia this or?
I tried all possible solutions... upgrading bios, slower tact rates of my grafikcard, deinstalling all previous drivers and the drvier sweeper to wipe everything out,... nothing works.

Actually I have had the same problems with my 8800GT crashing after awhile playing Company of Heroes or COD4 on any of the drivers above 178.24. I was just guessing that the new PhysX support was causing the card to do it. My BSOD always says that it is a driver error. Also with the new drivers the card now runs about 8*C hotter while idling. Even with the fan up to 60% and I have a Coolermaster CM-690 loaded down with good fans. So I don't think that it is a heat issue but I could be wrong. I think that I am running the 181.xx series now without any problems.

I dont think its the temperature of anything because my card has the same temperature with 178.13 or 182.06 (and the processor too)! But with 182.06 it crashes (without bluescreen, its a sudden shutdown and following restart), with 178.13 everything is fine... so this is definitley a driver problem... no temperature association!

Dahak i did not disable my antivirus before installing new drivers and i think that is surely not the problem.....

yes same case here i think from the time we have installed physix into our system with the drivers i have been having problems, it is surely not an overheating issue cause nvidea gpu can handle temp over 100 c and mine never crosses over 70 while playing any game and especially cod 4.. and the only difference is that with the older driver 169.21 i get idle temp around 50 c and cod4 65-66, with the 181 drivers i get around 55-56 c and 66 to 69 while running cod 4 so surely our cards are not facing any over heating problems

On the contrary sir,it has been my experience with nvidia drivers and it is also recommended by nvidia, that you need to disable your antivirus before installing graphics drivers. If you don't,then you get exactly the problem you are having now.I had the same issue a couple years ago with my 7800gt and after consulting with evga,I was told to disable my antivirus before installing the drivers.Following thier advice,I re-installed the drivers and then enabled my antivirus.I never had another issue after that.Besides,if you read nvidia "HOW TO INSTALL GRAPHICS DRIVERS",they recommend doing just what I said.Otherwise the graphics drivers will not configure correctly.Try it and see what happens.I think you'll find I'm right.

@Dahak

I always disable my Antivirus software (AVira Antivirus free) before installing anything so this isnt the problem... i tried it one more time a few minutes ago with av disabled again... no difference! but thx for you trying to help!

I also tried all combinations of installing and deactivating physX ... installing 8.9.x and the new 182.06 driver, installing the new one (9.03.x) with the new 182.06, also new physX and the working driver 178.13... and disableling physX totally before gaming ... i dont think its a physX problem we can solve be deactivating it! Installing the new 9.3.x physX and 178.13. Driver just works fine, so its a problem with the newer geforce drivers!

Anybody any other clues or hints?
