I am going to be purchasing a new video card, and it is my first nvidia card since the 6000 series was new. I have been doing my research and i cannot figure out which would be the best card to purchase. I have been looking at the EVGA 8800GT 512 meg card single slot cooling, and the EVGA 8800GTS G92 core 512 meg dial slot cooling. I cannot decide which is better because i have hear that the previous 8800GTS cards were horrible compared to the 8800GT, but that the new 8800GTS with the G92 core are a force to be reckoned with. The price difference isnt that huge seeing as the 8800GT is 209.99 brand new and the 8800GTS G92 core is 259.99, so only a 50 dollar difference. Which would you all recomend as far as the card to go with. I will be overclocking the 8800GTS G92 somewhat and also uping the fan speed. So here it is, which would you all get?

ps does the new 8800gt have the G92 core also? and i am purchasing these cards off of newegg.

8800 gts is essentially an 8800gt with better cooling and an overclock, so its about 20% (don't quote me on that figure) faster, but they are both based on the same core

They both have the same G92 core, GTS 512 has more shaders though making it faster. So the GTS 512 is faster, in fact there are reports of an OCed GTS 512
outperforming the 9800GTX (9800GTX uses G92 as well).

Sorry to quote you on this , but it's about 10% faster at stock.

The advantage is the higher overclocks and the large dual-slot cooler. Although I've heard that the gains from overclocking aren't that great :(.

Good choice to stick with Evga. I like that MSI card but I prefer Evga as a company. There's one other card choice to consider that I just recalled.......

......these two posts (particularly the first one) reminded me of this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130357

It's an Evga 8800GT with a dual slot cooler for $180. It's not the AKIMBO cooler but it's similar as far as I know. That's pretty much a steal at that price, and remember that Evga allows you to overclock their cards without voiding the lifetime warranty. Take that card to 700MHz+ core speed and (if it's stable ;)) you're good to go! Considering that the cheapest Evga GTS512 on Newegg is $230 (and that's after a rebate), it'll save you about $50 (or $80 if you ignore the rebate) with only a small decrease in performance (and the overclock will help gain that back easily).

how do i make sure that card has the G92 core? cuz that is truly what i am after. if the card doesnt have the G92 core im not gonna get it. basically is any one of these 3 cards badass enough to kick gary coleman in the nuts?

All 8800GT's are G92. All 8800GTS/512MB cards are G92. The GTS 320/640MB cards are the older G80.

The GTS/512 has more shaders than the GT but only makes it about 5-10% faster, sometimes less. If you can't afford the GTS, get the GT. If you can afford the GTS, get the GTS. They overclock like champs as well. My GTS has no issue hitting 750MHZ and i could probably bump it higher if I wanted.

also btw i may need a new power supply but im not sure (ive never run a beast of a card like this). at the moment im only running a 450 watt power supply, my specs will be as follows

AMD Athlon X2 64 4600+ at 2.4Ghz
Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard
6 gigs of ram
2 sata2 harddrives 250GB each both running at 7200RPM, and one IDE hard drive at 250gig also running at 7200RPM
Sony IDE dvd-RW dual layer burner
the 8800GT or GTS
2 120mm fans and 1 92mm fan
(i hope i got everything)

so will i need a new pow supply?

it says i would need 307 watts, doesnt that seem a little low? i mean i thought the 8800 was a beast of a card that ate power supplies for breakfast

The newer 8800's are much more power friendly. However we need more specifics on your 450W PSU. There are 450W PSU's and there are 450W PSU's. Just like a 2 trucks with 250HP. The one with 150Ft.lb of torque isn't going to pull out a tree stump, but the 400ft.lb truck sure will. Sorta catch that analogy?

Anyways what is the rating printed on the side of your PSU? or do you have the model?

i know that it is a tigerdirect brand i will look at the rating on the side when i get home from work. what exactly should i be looking for though? lol what is a rating?

It will be on a sticker on the side of the PSU. IT will give you some +5V, -5V,-12V, and +12V ratings. You want the +12V ratings. If it has multiple +12V rails it will say +12V1, +12V2, etc...

ex. +12V18A 18A being a 18Amp rating on that +12V rail. This is what we are looking for, Also a make and model will be good.

This one would be a LOT better for the same price; it has more amps on the 12V+ rail, higher efficiency (80+Certified, which means it will stay above 80% efficiency at all loads), and better quality (Rosewill PSUs aren't the most reliable).

that power supply looks good. I just need a solid power supply that wont die on me and is a good price. im thinkin that shall be the one i go with.

Yeah your PSU won't cut it with 16A.. Also Roswill PSU are not very good to say the least. Antec is.... ok I guess. Personally I think Corsair has come up with a great PSU in the last year. Buy.com actually sells them cheaper than newegg. There is a mailin rebate though, but 41A on a single rail is awesome for a 550W. More than enough for what you want it for.

It is this on on newegg:

ok so i got my motherboard today. and i bought a budget card, a evga 8400GS 256 meg card. i know i know this card sucks. but will it be able to run world of warcraft in the meantime until my 8800 arrives with my new power supply? i can also get a x1600 256 meg free by trading a usb tv tuner on craigslist. which would be better? cuz i can also use this 8400gs for the media pc i will build for my entertainment system in a few months, i just need to know if it will run WoW.
