8cores and 32gb RAM are 'all' they say I need!

Could use a few extra set of eyes to go over my parts list. I am a grad student and our lab workstation is fully booked most of the time. For my genomics applications, min requirements happen to be 8 core CPU and 32gb RAM. I saved up a bit to put together the following parts list. I don't do games, but some applications do use CUDA. I would be obliged if you guys could critic the parts list. https://it.pcpartpicker.com/list/LND7P3 I found relatively inexpensive 700W modular PSU; https://goo.gl/yotPyx Cheers Ram

If you are willing to deal with used parts. You could likely get a dual CPU Xeon E5-26xx V2 workstation going with 16 to 20 cores and 64GB to 128GB DDR3 ECC RAM. Plus be able to toss a GPU in it. How high you can go depends on local prices and if you go the easier approach with a Workstation or go for a used server.

If the software can scale well on dual CPU systems and makes use of all threads. It could perform much better. If 32GB RAM is the minimum. It can likely make use of the extra RAM. I'd imagine for that type of software. ECC memory is beneficial.

Loaded up Dell Precision T5610 with Dual E5-2650 V2 or faster CPU and 64GB RAM are quite reasonable.

The question is. Will you benefit more from dual CPU with lower per core speed...

The question is. Will you benefit more from dual CPU with lower per core speed but more total power? Would double the RAM with ECC help even if it is slower?
